Just thinking about this, there must be some other mechanism to read the fuel level above 50%. If the cluster is guessing, then it won't know if you filled it up 51% or 100%. I know if I dump 75% into the tank, the gauge will read 3/4.

I do know if you fill it right up to the filler neck, the gauge will show full for a much longer period of time, obviously because there is no "sensor" on the neck, so there must be something at the top of the tank to give another reading?
