Where were you when you heard the news 30 years ago today?

If you were alive 30 years ago can you remember where you were and what you were doing when your heard the King was dead.

I was woken up by my radio alarm clock (yes we had them back then) at 7.00am and the news came on saying Elvis was dead.
I turned it off rolled over and went back to sleep. When I woke up properly about 15 minutes later I thought I'd dreamt it, then I heard the 7.30 news with the same thing.
Huge Elvis fan, I was devistated, no I didn't cry but I was pretty upset.

Whats yor favourite Elvis song or movie?
No, thats too hard a question , there was so many, although a lot of his movies were pretty corny but there was some nice cars and bikes in them.
King Creole was pretty good, so was Teddy Bear.

Sorry to highjack but that sounds similar to what happend with me with the September 11 attacks.

I slept straight through the night only to wake up and hear it on the radio and see it all on TV. I never that something like that would ever happen and it was a huge shock.

Oh and sorry but i wasn't born when Elvis died.

I was only born in 1987, however i am a massive Elvis freak. my fave song would have to be Can't help falling in love.

I wish i was alive then. god how i wish that. Music from 1960-1980 is a billion times better than anything anyone can make today. they just dont tell stories like they used to.

I'm only 23 but one of my best mates (around the same age) is a huge Elvis fan. He has most of the albums, has a couple of Elvis tattoos, and has tons of Elvis merchandise. Even his car says Elvis across the back of it!

It was 10 days before our wedding, I was absolutely gutted, I was a big fan, hated the movies but loved the guys singing.

I always remember the day as it was so close to our wedding 30 years ago.

I hate what the media has done to him, it ****es me right off. I rememeber playing a tape in the car with my kids and they had no idea he could sing so well, they only knew of him by the shyte on TV.

I like a lot of his later stuff better as this what I grew up with, IMHO the early stuff doesn't show how good his voice really was.

Ahhh Yes!.. Remember it well!.. I was an apprentice machinist at Gov Ordnance factory, and was greeted by a wreath on my lathe that morning.
The guys were always ribbing me about my Californian poppy "slick-back" hair and Elvis siddies. I was a member of Elvis fan club and the Australian rock-n-roll appreciation society back then.
It truly WAS a tragic day!

Im 27, so i wasnt around when Elvis graced the earth, but always a fan of his music.

Just so much electricity about him.

My mates on this day every year give me a ribbing, as if im in mounring lol.

As for favourite song.......... American trilogy comes to mind, so does suspicious minds and always on my mind.

I was 15 when he died..I'm both a Beatles and Elvis fan.People say you're either one or the other (like ford and holden) but I liked both.

Heard the news when I was riding my bike home from school and saw the billboard at the local news agent. Ironically he had a hit on the charts at that time ...Way Down and seemed to be on the comeback trail.

I wonder if he'd have lived would he be as popular as he became once he died? Debatable point.

I was 16, and got a lift to work with Mum each day. Heard it on the car radio that morning, and we both just looked at each other in pure disbelief. I wasn't an avid fan, but had some of his records. My fave song of his was Steamroller. And will never forget his Aloha From Hawaii concert. Live via satellite, wow that was technology... Hahahaha.

Makes you wonder, what would such people like Elvis, Hendrix, Monroe, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Lennon, or Morrison be doing now if they hadn't died.

And would music be still like it is now if they hadnt passed when they did. For example, when Hendrix died he was getting into organising huge orchestra's and multiple guitars into recordings. Imagine the reunion tours and the $$ made!

Elvis, I was eating breakfast and heard it on the radio before going to school (kindergarten at Baulkham Hills North)

11th of September (note the order I'm not yank) I was up arround 2am with my wife and 6 month old son who wouldnt sleep (unusual for him) so i turned on the telly to watch walker texas ranger and thought this is a big budget episode, then it dawned on me

30 years ago, I was 4. I don't remember anything about his death but I do remember my parents loved him. They were huge fans! We had Elvis & Priscilla pictures all over the walls and I grew up with his music part of my life but as far as his death, can't remember a thing about it. Still love his music and have a few CD's & boxsets.

I have often wondered what he would be like now had he not died but I really think he was meant for that era. He belonged there. Every period in time needs a mark and the mark for that era was Elvis. It's where he belonged. I don't think he or his lifestyle could have adapted to suit the world as it is now.
