Not really related to an AU (although it'll be an AU towing the thing home), but I was wondering if anyone knows my legal obligations when buying an unregistered vehicle?
Do I need to inform vicroads, pay duty, transref of ownership papers, etc? Cheers!

just get a receipt with the VIN, paid amount, signed etc etc.
vicroads don't need to know anything about it until you re-register it. at which time they'll want the receipt to varify paid price for stamp duty etc. but make sure theres no finance owing and its not on a written off car register.

If it's less than (I think) 3 months out of rego you should be able to transfer it without needing to get it re-verified. Either way, you will have to pay stamp duty and transfer fees, rego, and probably plate fees too if it's considered a new reg.
Check the status here to make sure it's not stolen, written off, or under finance: http://www.vehiclestatuscheck.vicroads.vic.gov.au/ (This only covers vehicles registered in Vic obviously... it won't tell you if the car has been registered interstate) |

Vicroads have bought out a new set of tougher regulations for RWC now.
If the car is over 25 years old, the assessor can make you go to and get a Structural Engineers report on the vehicle - so as to make sure it isnt full of bog and tin foil. |
