Default What diff oil???

Hey all

Im doin my first diff oil change tomorrow. Just wanted to know wat oil i need to get for my xr8? Also ive heard u need a pump with the IRS? Can ya get that from supacheap?
Also theres a bit of a whine coming from the diff. Just wanted to know if any additives can be used? And if so wat are they??

I use Penrite Limslip 90 and Limslip Additive 7098.

That additive is NOT for the whine, it's for the cone chatter.

Ford spec oil is (according to the book) V8.XR Series & all IRS axels Mobillube SHC ID or Meet requirments ..ESZ-M2C190-A with Friction Modifier Sturaco7098... for IRS LSD axels .. 1.5 liters oil cap. + 100ml additve

I've got Redline heavy shockproof 85W250 diff oil in my car
No whine, a little loss of performance due to the drag from the oil and won't need changing again. Especially since I hardly drive it

It is impossible to get the oil in just using the spout they provide on the bottle as the exhaust is in the way.
I use a cheap 5 litre pressure sprayer with the nozzle removed.
You pressurize it before climbing under the car and then you can control it with the on off lever.
You can bend it slightly to get it in the filler hole but not too much as the cheap aluminium will crimp.
It is a little slow but sure beats a little tom thumb pump that you have to pump manually about a thousand times to get all the oil in.

One tip though, make sure you can undo the filler bung before letting all the old oil out.

I have been caught before dumping the oil and then fighting for 2 days to get the refill bung out to put the new stuff in !!!!

I used CASTROL SAF-XA in my LTD diff and it states it already has the additive in it.

I think it was about $22 a litre.

I changed it today!! Hopefully never again lol
i had to use a ****y little hand pump, 1000 pumps to get the oil in!!
i used valvaline sae90. only 13 buks a litre

I think the SAE 90 is for the non LSD diff.
If yours has a LSD then i think you should change the oil again.

You probably didn't read my post before using one of those little pumps, the pressure sprayer is the way to go.

As Peter said wrong oil type... and no additive will turn into a disaster with these diffs they start to chatter big time then whine then "BANG" : best to shell out a bit extra for the quality oils ..Just my 2 cents worth

From memory I use Penrite 85w/140 LSD oil and penrite additive. This stuff IS the best to use and fixes the LSD chatter issue.

For what it's worth, just because the lable states it is for LSD's doesn't mean it is right for yours! Kloster Ford in Newcastle replaced mine (because I wanted it changed) with a Synthetic LSD oil. Instantly my LSD stopped working (smoked 1 rear wheel very well).

I now have the correct oil and hope to put it in shortly and I am told my LSD will work again. Klosters have since stopped using it as it caused them more dramas than it was worth!

If you read an earlier post it states they used penrite limslip 90 and Limslip Additive 7098.

Did you look up the correct type of oil for your Ford when you bought the oil, it should state in the literature.

Read the bottle though as they may now add it to the oil, although I doubt the penrite has the additive in it.

I know Castrol state that there is no need to put the additive in as it is already mixed in with the oil in the correct amounts.

All the recommended stuff is wrong. They all specify what Ford use and when these diffs get a few k on them (over 50k) they develop the known LSD chatter issue. This is only something on the IRS LSD I believe and the easiest way to fix it is to go up in oil weight and use the LSD additive.

Yes I have done A LOT of research into this as when I bought my XR it had the chatter issue. Ever sine I changed to what I said above there has been no sign of chatter and the LSD works very well. There are also a few other members here who will back me up on this one.

IIRC the fluid is to keep the LSD "happy". Tends to get bitey and increased wear without it but don't quote me on that one.

Ask as many questions as you want, there are no "stupid" questions only stupid mistakes. If we didn't want to answer questions we wouldn't be here anyway lol.

if you like doing burnouts at the drags ,it will fry your diff and turn it into a single spinner.but for everyday driving ,behaving yourself it keeps them quite.

from what i'm lead to believe the additive just make's your lsd slip a bit more and not so tight and chattery around tight turns.

As stated, the wrong oil and NO additive will turn your LSD into an std open diff!

I know this because before having my diff oil changed, getting off the line was so easy. It would start to slip, diff would bite sending power to both wheels and away we go with minimal wheel spin.

Now, just smokes 1 rear wheel. When I mentioned this to Ford, their reply was not another, this oil must be wrong!

Not sure as the recommended penrite oil is SYN GEAR 80/140 going from the website with no mention of the additive.

I will remember that info russell when my diff gets chattery.

As stated I have used the Castrol synthetic stuff and have no problems at 170 000 k's.

I suppose the oil mobs have to go with Fords recommendation.

That they do. Ford know of the issue but they don't really care, better for them if they just tell you that your diff is buggered and that you need a new one.

To save starting a new thread, when should I be changing the diff oil? Went for a drive on the weekend and noticed the LSD was chattering its head off turning hard right. It was the worst I had ever heard it. Would a fluid change help? Should I be worried that my diff is making this noise?

Fluid change to what I specified should fix that up.

Hi guys, another stupid diff question. Where is the filler bung located for the IRS diff? I have looked in my Ellery's workshop manual, but that tells me everything I DON'T need to know. I know the drain plug is the bottom one.
