Default Camping stories

Ok, we have all been camping......

Getting away on the friday after work and going bush for the weekend. Setting up the tent, the camp fire and chucking a few ales back whilst the coals get hot and we look at the stars......

We all have a good camping story to tell, lets here yours......

Cheers,

Philbie

when i went camping about a year ago now, i had one to many to drink and was pushing alog into the fire with my foot. I slipped and fell in and went out cold on the way down. Next thinkin i know my nad is in the fire and i'm yelled for someone to pull me out.
Result 7 3rd degree burns on my right hand. i'll cop that. But when i went ot the hospital to get treated, they sent me home withoust anything. Was in pain for a week.

When i went camping bout 6 months ago went bush bashing. Felt like half an hour, we were gone for close on 2. I was standing in the tray, good times!

My smart mates decided to throw and empty butane can in the fire! Long stort short, Missed my car but 1 foot. Missed me by 1 foot(I was ducking behind my car) embeded itself about 2in into a tree just past my head. Scary thing is I had decided to move my car forward a metre before they threw the can in! And people say SMOKING will kill you, HA!!

Intersting, and not a well known fact, but Petroleum Gas is compressed 270 times to turn it into Liquid Petroleum Gas (LPG), this compressing process makes the liquid very cold, so if you have 1 (one) litre of LPG and you superheat it, like throwing it into a fire, then when it explodes (and it does) you will then have 270 litres of Petroleum Gas, or a B.L.E.V.E. )a Boiling Liquid Expanding Vapour Explosion), or a bloody dangerous bang. Not a good idea, eh? :SaiyanSmi

scenario: 3 males, 3 females, half a 6 man tent. its raining, we're wet, cold, and uncomfortably lying on uneven ground. hear some slurping going on, and i yell out "roll call!" 4 names come out loud and clear before a mouth sounding like its full of c0ck makes a sound......

that and the usual "i cant be bothered using kindling, wheres the jerry full of fuel" fireball story

I skip even thinking about kindling, I go straight to torching stuff with petrol. Too much work.

Lots of fond memories from up your way Philbie, mostly at Torrumbarry.
Falling in fires, sinking boats(forgetting to put bungs in).
Getting cars bogged, falling off dirt bikes.

One that springs to mind, i arrived late on a Friday night somewhere opposite Moorool caravan park on the Victorian side.
The boys had the fire going on the bank, we were all standing around talking, and i took a few steps backward, and fell about 20 feet into the Murray below, i didnt realise how much of a drop there was, as its only a couple of feet from the bank to the river at Torrumbarry.

Well camping was the number one thing to do when i was a young fella, unlike the youth of today stuck behind an xbox or playstation.
We use to head off on the pushbikes, loaded up full of everything we didn't need and some of what we did, never to forget a heap of baked bean cans. Find a nice queit spot along the river not far from a main road, bush track or pine break and set up camp. And get those fishing rods in the water.
Us younger fellos back then were quite adventurous, we used to walk the river banks of the glenelg, up to 10 k or more, catching bags of fish where ever we went, for a few years we were the envy of the local fishing club.
It's amazing how much noise a can of beans can make in a camp fire in the dead of night. :
We used to fight each other, tie dead water rats or a burnt sausages to someones fishing line & put dead animal cacasses in a 'particular persons' sleeping bag, on numerous occasions, but never the less we still all went home as mates. We did have a few nasty accidents, hooks right through fingers, big bike stacks, broken dads or big brothers fishing rods and bruised egos that tend to take the torch and go home.
What we used to hate was the older brothers turning up in the middle of the night, full of beer and mad manners trying their best to ruin our night, pinching the esky was a good idea but usually ended up in violence. :
Camping with family was a different manner, a very organised affair, the best one was at rocklands dam back in mid 80's one easter when the dam was near at it's peak of health. Those few days fishing with dear old uncle O.K and my Pa i will never forget, catching 3-4 kg redfin hand over hand. And those old railway storys limericks and yarns uncle Mulga used to spin around the campfire were something to be heard, an artform in themselves.
aaaarrrr to be young again...

with my very first car, a 1981 subaru 1800 wagon, we went on a camping trip, and find ourselves on a rather coarse gravel road. engage 4wd, and have some fun around the corners. hear a gynormous bang, and car starts losing power.
conks out soon, and we roll it onto the side of the track. fiddling around with just about everything under the bonnet, before we realise the dizzy cap has come off, hence the loud crack.
snap it back on and proceed to tank slap the wagon into a tree. oh well, at least cars were made solid back in the day.

ewwwwww what a horrible word...
I have a really good reason for hating camping (now anything 3 stars and less is considered camping)...
I rolled my car going up a steep hill in first gear.. hit the cliff and basically that made me roll... the road was meant to be 100klms, but I doubt anyone could ever have gone that speed up that hill...
That was 17 or so years ago now.. never ever been since :

not nice.. no nice memories of the whole camping thing.. :

Remind me not to go 4WD Bashing with you Josh .... hee hee.

Last time I want camping was a few year back on Stockton beach with mates ... and another 4WD group as well .... great times had by all ... fun antics.

Also using an old XD Falcon bonnet with the Pajero 4rd row seat bolted to it ... and a snatch strap tied to the bonnet latch .... being towed along the beach (sideways into the surf) is great fun

March 2003:

Was leading a hike through the Bungonia area. Team of 4. I was the oldest at 16 and the team leader.

Long story... but the gist of it is:

We were cut off by a Landslide (in the next gully North of Forhams Canyon for those who know the area), activated an EPIRB and were airlifted by SouthCare Rescue Helicopter.

is more to it than that, but I cbf typing.

maybe tomorrow when I am a bit more bored.

8 of us went to NorthWest Island.. its about 8 hours (with a good boat) east of Gladstone, right on the bottom of the Reef

THats it .. Absolutley nothing but an island in the middle of nowhere surrounded by coral reef..

First night, got dropped off from the charter on sunset due to leaving late.. Couldn't set-up camp in the dark, but it was a ripper of a night, beers and fishing until the sun came up.

Day2: Set-up camp, only to find a million and one plover holes everywhere

Day3: WAke up to find some clown didn't pull one of the 3 tinnies onto the beach far enough and it had washed away to China

Day 4: Off the reef in the tinnie, fishing and having a laugh sunburnt to crisps we see one of those huge mofo Catermans dropping scooba drivers into our burliegh trail. We decided the right thing todo was let them know but decided having tinnie races thru the twin hulls was more fun.

Day 5: Abit more snorkling, just off the coral shoal when my mate spots what he said was some house gutter on the sea floor.. I swim down to investagate and was just about to reach out and grab it when the sand shifted and these HUGE big freaking eyes appeared out of the sand.. I was just about to grab the trail of a giant wobbegong. I don't care what the sceintists say, MAN CAN SWIM BACKWARDS very fast

Day 6: After fishing off the shoal for a few hours, dressed in garbage bags to stop the spray we decide to head into shore, now you can only get the tinnies back to the beach at high tide, anyway one boat raced off and surprise surprise our tinnie wouldn't start.. So after drifting around the island an executive decision was made that someone would have to swim back to the shoal and then walk back to fetch the other boat and tow us in.. Well I lost and was at the time the best swimmer so I derobed my garbage bag and headed for the shoal.. Not 10 seconds after I get into the water my mate starts yelling that he has seen a shark.. FFS, we'd been seeing them all day but WHY NOW!! Ian Thorpe would'nt of caught me that day, I swam so damn fast I swear I was ontop of the water. I made it back to the shoal and for good measure swam an extra 5 mtres or so thru about a foot of water :P

You think day 6 is a ripper, it isn't over yet.. I then had to walk about 100 metres barefoot thru the coral to reach the beach.. If you've ever had a coral cut, you know how sharpe that sh|t is, well my feet looked like I'd been doing a dance on a cheese grater.. I was yelling for my mates and they were waiting for me on the beach.. For the sake of drama I hit the beach like Robinson Caruso and collapsed in a bloody mess.. They dragged their boat out thru the channel and around 9 oclock returned with everyone on board

Night 6. After the adventures of the day, the biggest storm hit, blew the campsite all over the island, teeming down rain we decided that we would play drunken idiot brandy with a rotten fish, well that turned into our own re-make of Lord of the Flies.. People hiding in plover holes, up trees, in the ocean, you name it; the fish was feral.

Day 7. After looking at my poor tootsies we cleaned them up and dressed them the best we could.. But I still wanted to go fishing etc so I put two empty bread bags over my feet to keep the bandages dry :P

Day 8. THe charter boat turned up to pick us up, and after loading all our gear onto the boat, the captain informs us that a trawler has found our tinnie .. A slight detour to get our wayward tinnie and as we got close enough to hand the trawler deckhand our last carton of beer our boat rode a swell and came smashing down on his transome. Splinters and chunks of wood everywhere.

It was the most adventerous, fun thing I have ever done, I recommend it to anyone

Might as well add to this and make my 1st post

Went camping with some mates (3 guys and 3 girls) up at the basin (camping park 1/2 hour ferry trip from palm beach) in late feb. Basically we just got drunk and had a great time with random people. Highlights of the trip would be

-One guy getting burnt 3 times in 2 days
-Same guy not having the frame to his tent and sleeping outside on the grass
-Same guy again getting his sleeping bag wet and having to sleep on the grass again but this time with no sleeping bag
-Once again same guy running into a tree resulting into his already burnt chest getting cut up a little and putting him in a lot of pain (BTW i won the bet of who would need the first aid kit and who would have to help him lol)

The funniest bit would of been tripping over a tent in the middle of the night, taking a bad hit to my nuts only to have some woman come out and yell at me while I was rolling around on the floor.

Went up to a mates property just over two years ago for a joint 21st and 18th. On the way we were following an EA Wagon packed to the brim full of clothes and belongings along the Chain of Ponds Rd. Just 30 seconds after my Dad makes a smart assed comment about the ethnicity of the owners of the wagon, the rear left wheel flies off, bounces over the armco into a tree and back across our path ala Lowndes at Bathurst. Thanfully it missed me in my little ol' Pulsar. Got out to render assistance to find the Wagon had only 2 studs left on the rear left. I was curious as to whether it lost 3 when the wheel come off or if it only had 2 to start with...

i went camping a while back with a couple of mates, drinking, shooting and running amok (not in that order) and we decided to take a mates FJ40 landy for a drive for some firewood, so we took the 12x6 tandem and set off, a couple of hours later we returned with the trailer chockas and we were backing it down the hill when the trailer jacknifed one way and then again the other way, at this time the girls were worried we were gonna die.... but it was cool, so we set off again without the trailer and with the whole crew, about 10 crammed in the FJ40, we found a massive log that was left by the blokes that cut railway sleepers so we tied the drag chain to it and decided to take it back... well it was mighty heavy for the old girl, probly about 2 1/2 or 3 tonnes so it took about an hour and a half to drive just over 5 kms through the bush, so instead of testing the affects of gravity and forbies again we thought it would be smart to roll it down the hill and let it gracefully land in the fire..(it sounded good at the time). anyways we un tied it from the sick- sounding landy and pushed it forward over the hill.... the descent was certainly gracefull after it rolled over a tent, through the fire, through a swag and into the river, so anyway as long as my tent was all good and it didnt hit the eskys we were sweet, later that night we thought it would be a good idea to throw a bag of fireworks on to the open fire. just a few burns... but all was good.....

ahhh the things u do when your under the influence.....
