Default What does flash updates mean

Having a conversation with a more tech savy bloke about the AU's today.
I told him I did all servicing & repairs on my AU When he mentioned I should at least take it to Ford to have any lastest Flash updates done. (WTF)
What is Flash updates & is it a myth. As the car runs well with 12.3 around town & down to the high 8's per 100Kms on long trips.
The only thing I notice is when the revs hits just over 5,000RPM the mtr gets a small missfire. I put that down to the VCT ecu stopping over revving of the mtr.
