For piece of mind, if possible get the pro's to do it. The burnt smell could also be bands & or cluch plate material (the trans specialist will cut open & inspect the old filter for any friction material) they will know what to do adjustment wise to make the gearbox last longer.
Iirc the band adjustment on btr's arent very simple, burnt oil smell & colour indicates it hasnt been looked at for a while, your transmission probably needs expert tlc imo. Good luck with it! cheers, Maka
