Tailshaft Compatibility?

Hi E Seires guys,

This is my first post here (I hang out on the AU site) but I need some advice from you guys if you please.

This was formerly posted on the AU site, but I didn't get much response. I hope you may be able to help me.

I may need to change my tail shaft (funny vibrations at highway speeds - vibes felt in transmission tunnel).

Both the auto trans guy and my mechanic suggested changing one over to see if the vibes cease. Both blokes also agree that it's not wheel bearing noise, OR transmission vibes, OR diff related.

The trans guy suggested using an EF/EL one as they are much more robust, being a little heavier/thicker etc. This is because I changed the shaft late last year, but some of the vibes persisted, and are getting worse.

Do they change straight over? My understanding is that they do, but the EF/EL ones are heavier and more robust. Will using a heavier shaft have any adverse consequences on the other drivetrain components?

I've been told that it won't but does anyone have a definitive answer?

Just in case, my mechanic is bringing 2, one E series and an AU one, just to be sure.

What are your thoughts?

I dont know about E series to au, but the auto and manual tailshafts are the same (ie 6cyl auto & 6cyl manual, v8 auto & v8 manual, not sure about 6cyl - v8 though)

so they're convinced it's not the unis? My tailshaft's unis decided to give up on life and mine developed a vibration from that.

As for your question, I'm unsure sorry mate.

hi mate your vibrations could be a few things...this is what im thinking!

have you lowered you car at all? have you lowered rear only or front only, if so your driveline angles from your gearbox to tailshaft to diff are most likly out putting more strain on your universal joints!!! causing notcheness....thus resulting in vibrations...

also if your tailshaft is out of balance (which happens often it will cause vibrations aswell.....get it balanced to check!

also may be your diff centre aswell has a tiny bit to much freeplay and your mechanics cant pick it up as they say "shes right".....this can cause vibrations over the rear axle and is hard to pin point exactly where its coming from....

check theses 3 things out for me and let me know how u go mate

Thanks for your thoughts.

Car has been lowered, the problem was there before.

Uni joints are ok, but I wonder how much it would be to replace them anyway?

2 Mechanics reckon it's not the diff and the tailshaft is the easier of the two to work on first. We're changing that first to see, which is why I asked about the E series one.

If that does nothing, we will then go the diff option. Hopefully it doesn't come to that.
