Default No more Mondeo Sedan

Revised Mondeo model line up

We wish to advise that following a review of the Mondeo model range, we have
elected to immediately phase out the sedan body style from the MA Mondeo Range.
The ongoing model line up will now consist of the following:
• Zetec Hatch
• TDCi Hatch
• XR5 Turbo Hatch
• Zetec Wagon (Available July 2009)

I guess in sedan form it is too close in dimension to a Falcon without the pulling power or towing capacity. More importantly is the price.

Zetec Wagon will be interesting the only wagon under the blue oval.

I couldnt see the point in the sedan, no matter how hard I looked at it. Also was the same price.

Can understand why they dropped it.

The hatch was the pick of the two anyway. It looks better than the sedan and has a lot better load access.

What was interesting is the mondeo had better rear leg room than BF falcon.

Its actually as long, and wider than the FG.

Good idea, why would anybody have bought the sedan, when the hatch both looks better, and is much more practical.

Yep, very similar case there, but I think a big noticeable difference between the two (that I found anyway) is that the rear hatch on the Mazda feels a lot heavier than on the Mondeo.

I blame the factory in Belgium!

I guess we can now finally drop that old chestnut for the ongoing poor Mondeo sales at the end of each sales month. ;)

I guess there wasn't a real shortage of cars, just customers.

Mondeo is a good car, but its got very tough competition in the Mazda 6 and Ford dealers desperate to move Falcons.

The sceptic in me believes the Mondeo sedan was just an experiment by Ford HQ to see if they could move enough stock to justify dropping the Falcon.

Why else would they park the Mondeo sedans at the front of the Ford stand at the Perth motor show when they released the FG Falcon, Why else did they adjust the price structures on falcons for fleet buyers, Why else would a car company have two, nearly identical (in size and visual design) cars for sale? Makes no sense.

If in fact the Mondeo sedan is gone, it means the Falcon held its own and lives to fight another day. And so It should, its an Australian Icon. The Mondeo is a bloody front wheel drive large car, are people so detach from driving in this day and age that they would settle for that garbage?

Lets not even mention post warranty maintenance costs on the euro car (something that seems to get lost in the new car smell). Anyone seen the price of a water-pump "hose" on the last Mondeo that graced our shores. Put it this way, the parts guys refer to it as the gold plated rubber hose.

I'm glad to see the back end of it. Except for the fact I have to look at those cone head tail lamps one more time.

Base model (LX?) is also gone, or had that previously been dropped? Not sure why they wouldn't bring in a diesel model also.

Hype. Make people walk past the rest of the range to see the new Falcon instead of stopping at the front of the display to have a quick look before walking off not looking at anything else.

Funnily enough i can see the commodore heading down a similar path soon as part of its model rationalization....
The Commodore sedan and hatch are just too similar to keep both across the range....

You can barely even pick the difference between the 2 they look so similar. They were better off dropping the lowest selling version.

Um, you sound a bit lost...They are dropping the sedan and adding a wagon...The Mondeo is not sellling poorly as a whole, just the sedan.

Its sales targets were modest to start with by any fair measure and it has always struggled to meet them. The sedan was the worst performing sales wise, but the range as a whole, hasn't set the market on fire. My reference was to the excuse thrown up by Ford PR when the media starting sniffing around about Mondeos reception in the Australian market not being too good. Blame allotments from Belgium they said - can't get them into the country etc. Good for a couple of months, but started to wear a bit thin after that as Ford yards with unsold Mondeos started to testify.

Like I said, Mondeo is in a very competitive segment and it has to contend with some very good cars and a dealer network what wants to offload Falcons. So no not lost, just looking beyond the blue tinted glasses.

Regards,
Dan
