Whats The Best Way To Clean a Edelbrock Cast Alloy Inlet Manifold

Hi my edelbrock inlet manifold is very dirty and looks crap what's the best way to clean it (its off the engine), I gave truck wash a go with a lot of elbow grease BUT still heaps of crap left

And i did a bit of a search on the net and a lot of the yanks are saying to leave it in COKE lol ????

sand blast it,
or take it to an engine shop and get them to chuck it through a robo-wash,

not really much you can do at home except maybe buff it with a wire buff in a drill to get in to the tight spots

sandblast is by far the best way. It will bring it up nice and new.
Failing that you can scrub it clean and use something like carb cleaner. Vinegar works to some extent.

hot tank at a machine shop... blasting cabinet will bring up that out of the box look..

used to pollish them years ago.
Oil any Kind will do we used to use tranny fluid.
Lots or wet & dry 400 600 and 1000 or 2000 grit and lots of elbow grease
the oil keeps the removed material on the sheet and helps the polishing process.
finish with autosol and it will shine like the sun.
Takes about 2 weeks from memory

Well Mythbusters tested the use of coke as a cleaning fluid....works on some things like chrome...i forget the episode beyond that

AliBrite Pour it on and use a firm Bristle scrubbing brush (even a Dunny Brush) and when she's foaming up keep scrubbing then rinse it looks great after that.

Get it hot tanked or ultrasonic tanked.
Both get out the oil grease and other rubbish still in the casting pores of the metal and will give you a good basis for whatever you want to do next.

I have heard brake cleaner can also used but have no experience myself.

if you have a motorcycle shop close by, ask them who they use for Bead Blasting.
or look up bead blasting in the yellow pages.
to make it look like a brand new out of the box item, get it wet look bead blasted.
last one i had done cost about $25, the finish is the closest to the out of the box look, a slight sheen to it.


sand blasting or normal bead blasting will clean it, but will leave it dry and it is very easy to mark etc after being done

i use Chemtech Blitz at home, it brings up alloy well too,
i put it in a cheapo trigger spray bottle undiluted, spray it on and wait 5-10 mins.
then give it a good rinse off, or use high pressure washer to clean it off.
when spraying the Blitz onto the alloy, dont let it dry out, so use it in the shade,
and try not to let it run too, it can leave streaks, and you will need to redo it.
it contains phosphoric acid, and if you are doing it in the car it will remove gold irridite coatings off bolt heads etc etc.
try not to get it on your paint too, quicky was it off with plenty of soapy water
the finish it leaves is very clean, and is a matt finish.
i apply a coat of W/D spray to help keep it clean afterwards.
it cost about $12 iirc, supercheap etc sell it too

OK thanks to every one who has replied i gave it a clean with WD40 1st didn't get to much off, then i used OVEN CLEANER and did a great job got most of the stuff off but will be taking to sand blaster tomorrow so see if gets back to a new look they are only charging $35 to to it, then i will wipe it over with wd40 again to its not so dyed out will post photos when i get it back
