Default I6 to V8, or just V8?

G'day I was wondering if anyone knows what would be the cheaper and easier option. I'm in the market for a Black EB/ED Fairmont Ghia, but am at a loss to find one in Victoria. I've been looking for several months now and was wondering if it would be better for me to get an I6 and have it converted to a V8.

How much would that cost approximately?

Bear in mind that I plan to mod the crap out of the engine. (Even supercharging it). I've also thought about having a 351 bolted in (like what ScoopED is doing).

As i prefer manual cars, it would be converted to one if it was auto. But would it be possible to convert it to 6 speed?

Any help is appreciated.

1) Its cheaper to find a factory 5.0 than convert a 6==>8. WAY cheaper
2) 6 Speed manual will probably run at arround $7-8000 all up.

Agree with Dan totally.

Yeah, looking at crap loads for the 8 conversion, better to get factory. As for transmission, again, crap loads and probably alot of hassles.

Id get an I6 and work on that, cheaper and still has alot of potential.

if you're going nuts on the engine.
go factory V8...

don't settle for a 6 if you've got plenty of $$ to spend

Guaranteed to be an Auto unless it's already been converted (and not many have been i would think)
Already been said that it'd be easier to buy an 8 than convert.
Very expensive if you can't do all the work yourself.
Numerous different parts would need to be sourced aswell.
Do you have to be set on a BLACK one?
There's a few cobalt blue ones for sale.
Also a V8 ED Ghia for sale in S.A (unsure on colour yet, but i might buy that one) It's only a short trip from Vic (and lots of fuel)

If you have your heart set on a black one, it'd be MUCH easier and cheaper to buy a V8 and have it resprayed to whatever colour you want...

HAHA someone had to do it!

as dave said though fox, a full respray and fitting a GLi - XR8 (where would be much easier to find a V8 manual) out like a ghia would cost less than a V8 conversion - specially if you couldnt do the work yourself

yeah, i'd just get it resprayed, i mean it will cost a bit less, don't know if im saying that so you will buy mine tho, lol, sorry j/k, if you can find a eb Ghia V8 manual go for it and paint it, that way the paint job would be good too, coz black cars are normally pretty bad they are hard to keep looking clean and good.

If you have heaps of room and are handy with tools, then buy a NC fairlane and your six cylinder fairmont. Swap motors, looms and all the other stuff and then sell the fairlane as a six. While doing the conversion you can put in the manual.

As V8 wagons are very hard to find, I was going to go down this route. I believe though that you will have much more luck finding a V8 fairmont than what I did with a wagon. In the end however, I found a V8 wagon and put in the manual later.

Thanks for all the replys guys. It seems as though I'll just get a factory v8 and get a respray. (was planning on getting a respray to jet black anyway, I just didn't want to worry about the engine bay).

Also, I was wondering, what do you thing would be a better idea. A EB/ED supercharged v8, a turbo 6 EL, or a turbo 6 AU? I love the shape of the EB/ED, not to mention driving an 8, but I also like the interior style of the EL and AU, it's so much newer, and would be easier to modify. (That is put a DVD sound system in)

Oh and TBO240, The truth is out there!
