MB Diesel Filter Change Question

I was thinking of changing the diesel filter, as it looks like an easy job. What are your experiences of the bleeding/priming of the system?

My workshop manual states that simply turning the key over for 10 seconds (this can be done 3 times) could be enough to get the system primed again. If the car starts, the system is primed.

Has that been enough for you all? Or have you needed to purchase a bleeding kit?

Was enough for me, I just turned it to the position before ignition about 6 times and it started fine (MB Zetec)

I happened to do mine last week. I tried turning the ignition on/off/on/off etc. but no go. I could see the air in the fuel line. Maybe I just suck and let too much in...
Anyways, I made this to bleed it out and it worked like a charm:



There are 2 holes in the lid, one for the bike pump tube and one to hold the end of the vacuum over.

It was pretty easy to change but required the biggest socket I had and a tub to catch the fuel.
I didn't have any clean diesel on hand to fill the new filter before installing. I am thinking that is where all the air came from.

Did you get the filter from Ford? How much was it?

There is no more to take pics of... Other than my vacuum...
**By no way am I a mechanic or subject matter expert**

-The tube is a standard bike pump extension and there are 2 holes in the lid of a jar.
-Drill 1 hole big enough for the bike pump tube and screw it in (connection was not perfect).
-I just drilled my 2nd hole the same size, you can see it just before the 'Dolmio'.
-Connect the pump tube to the top of engine, over to the right with cover off.
-Start up vacuum and place over 2nd hole. Diesel should start to splutter and flow into the jar. you can see how much I sucked through.
-First start took a few sec of cranking because I still had the rear in the air so the bleeder was not level and the most high point.
-checked the seal around the new filter for leaks.
-Took pic of my new tool for the forums.
-Poor fuel back into the tank using the high flow adapter thingy.

-Tackled the evil that is the Cabin filter change. But that is another story.

By vacuum you mean the vacuum you created when you cranked the engine right?

I also have changed the cabin/pollen filter. It was a right royal pain in the butt. Next time I will replace the hex screws with Phillips head screws to make it easier to get them out with screwdrivers.

By vacuum, I mean one of the things you use to clean your carpet. Stick the end of the hose over the hole in the lid to create a vacuum in the jar.
