I'm extremely impressed this thread hasn't turned to poo, it was a great read

Hi Everyone,

Just came across this Forum by accident when looking for information regarding requirements for maintaining Cat H licences.

Submitted my Licence paperwork last December and wanted to know would any shoots I have between then and when licence is issued be counted toward required shoots for the year?

Also, do the required number of shoots per year apply to each weapon or each different calibre? ie once I have done my probation year and I want two 22's and a 357, is that 12 shoots.

hope someone can answer and sve me sitting on the phone to WLB.

Thanks

Dan

Submitted my license application in early December, still waiting on approval. In South Australia.

Something that takes 15 minutes in the USA (background check to see if you are a felon) takes 3 months (or more) in Australia. If the firearms branch was a business it would have went bankrupt many moons ago.

So l'm currently looking/thinking about getting a gun licence as some of my cousins in NSW have theirs for hunting, just a few general questions firstly:

Do l need a clean criminal record?

Do l need a specific licence per each gun?

Are there different category licences for different gun designs?

Can you use your licence interstate?

and gun storage what is required there?

Do you have to log all the bullets and where you hunt?

l know thats quite a few questions but good basic replies would help immensely.

criminal record, I would say yes but depends on what's been done, for example drink driving I don't think matters but killing someone while drinking driving would

yes I have a cat a and b licence
cat a is for bolt action leaver .22 410 shottys etc and cat b is for the bigger cal stuff like 308s 338s, 45 70
you are not allowed pump action shotguns and semi auto weapons on a cat a/b licence
in qld cat c/d licence are next to impossible to get for joe citizen
unless you are primary producer, pro shooters, security, police and military
shame really they get all the cool toys...

interstate licence im gonna leave that alone, what I would suggest is calling the states weapons licencing that you want to go to and get the details
for example there storage of weapon's while in transport could be different from qld to nsw

storage, just get a decent safe and bolt it to the wall or floor
keep your bolts in a different safe and same with ammo
I know its a pain but you got to make it hard for people to steal it
and keeps its out of reach of children or teens
and that way you know everything is secure

qld you don't but I think nsw I herd there was something about producing the paper work for what gun you are buying the ammo for
example would be if you own a 22 you cant go buy 44mag hand gun ammo
but again not really sure on that, I do know that qld gun shops will not serve people from nsw because they are not going to get involved with the legality of another states firearms laws with ammo

hope this helps and good luck with it
I wish the shooter forum was still going its got a lot of info from all over aus but sadly cleaver firearms got it shut down for some muppet on there making false statements about them
went to court and everything

Mr.NiceGuy

Do l need a clean criminal record?
Traffic infringements seem ok, but assault, GBH, B&E(pretty sure) and a couple of others are no goes, also if there is a current AVO out on you, no chance.

Do l need a specific licence per each gun?
Not per gun but each category, Cat A, is rim fire, shot gun and air rifle, including paintball markers. Cat B is center fire rifles. Cat C Pump action shot guns, semi-auto shot guns, rim fire rifles and center fire rifles up to 5 shot magazines. Cat D Is the same as Cat C but higher magazine capacity.

Are there different category licences for different gun designs?
No, licence categories are based on firing type, rim or center. You can have a .22LR rifle in bolt, pump or lever action all on the Cat A licence same as being able to own a .223Remington in bolt, pump or lever action

Can you use your licence interstate?
Yes

and gun storage what is required there?
Generally speaking, a gun safe is a container secured to a permanent structure that is of non-pry-able design with a locking mechanism which engages in at least 3 points

Do you have to log all the bullets and where you hunt?
No, no requirements on logging home many rounds you have fired or where.

Not one of your questions but you will need to have a Genuine Reason for applying, can be either - Work (need proof of requirement), sporting (clay target club for shot gun or range for rim-fire or center fire - not allow to legally hunt on this licence), Recreational Hunting/Varmin Control (allows you to hunt on private property - technically not allowed to shoot competitions at a range on this licence)

How times have changed (for the better i guess) i remember walking into a big sports store on the Gold Coast many years ago and walked out with a replica Tommy gun, it fired 22's and had the circular magazine, i think you could also get them in 38s' even came with its own violin case, no license or id needed.. Kmart used to sell guns as well, they were everywhere, not surprised at the many thousands that were handed in in the buy back a few years ago..
