Default Did i just get reamed on my nsw trailer inspection?

SO i went to a new place for my trailer inspection (big 16 foot twin axle -- think car trailer with sides). country servo, been there befor so didnt worry to much as they have always been good.

they said i now need lights on the side as the rules have changed - i said OK because i thought it wouldnt be that much but the bill came in at over $900

this was for the new side lights, 2 tyres, new bushes, and a couple of minor things (reflectors) 5 hours at $110 an hour.

now that i think of it - even if they change the light rules, that shouldn't apply to previous trailers (like changes in car rules - you dont need seat belts in cars that didnt come with them)

did i get chumped?

Was it just a pink slip or was it a blue slip?
There is where the difference lies.

5 hours is a bit rich, depending on how many bushes they changed.

You got reamed and you begged for it, so the mechanic obliged.

If you did not get the work quoted before hand you basically gave them a blank cheque to fill out.

Did you not ask how much the work was going to cost and what needed doing before you gave the go ahead????

yeah - my bad.

I have got him to do all my rego stuff for 4 years and he was always good. I needed the trailer that arvo and was in a rush so just said do it, thinking it would be a couple of hundred - maybe he needed the money so he is reaming his customers.

I figure I paid $300 more than i should have, so its not the end of the world but disappointing as i wont go back.

He tried to apologies and might have even knocked a few bucks off if i persisted but he'd made his bed and i didn't need the agro. I Just said its a small town and he should have known better - word travels fast here.

I think i will down size to a smaller trailer that you dont need to inspect and rego is cheaper also (rego and inspection for cars, trailers, motor biikes boats, ffs it adds up fast )

lesson learnt - do basic stuff yourself and then always get a quote (no matter what)

rules on light been around long time-they are just policing them.

we replace bushes every year for council fleet box trailers. used daily. we recently bought leave sets as they are getting old, the cost was very cheep-the bushes by the box are cheep but the labour to replace them would have to make it near even.

my trailer [car float] was 1995 build 2500Kg requires 4 wheel brakes with electric battery back up. modified 3500KG+ trailer.
side lights front-rear. white lights on the front
number of yellow and red reflectors. as it was complied and sold to government order that way-require engineers report to change.

the 2500Kg trailer at work [lawn mower crew] complied as home made trailer. it has red/yellow clearance light on the mud gaudes and a few stick on yellow side reflector and red on the rear. our tail lights have no reflector so we use stick ons.
It has over run brakes on the front axle only.

you have to get a pre 1981 home made to by pass loads of regulations.
