I followed a porsche on St Kilda Road today, didn't pay too much attention to it, but it looked brand spankers. The number plate was 911997. I'm assuming it was one of these???

Hey I was just wondering if that Porsche had rear parking sensors?
If you look closely the rear bar has those sensors that you normally see on the new commodores with rear parking sensors.
Pretty cool but I dont think those Porsche's would have much trouble being parked considering the size of them.

looks good, but too similar to previous models. don't get me wrong, i've got huge respect for Porsche, and the fact that they are one of the only well known manufacturers that are still going it alone is proof that their doing something right, but i'd just like to see them push the design boundaries every once in a while.

Seriously though, I know it's their heritage to maintain this shape and all, but how can you keep the same shape for one model for soooo long. It's been styled to death.

Keeps its heritage. There's no need to re-style it, it's beautiful as it is. Plus the older cars hold their value better that way.

Ferrari tends to have long-time model runs too, just nothing like 43 years. Ferrari 308/328 lineup went from 1974 to 1988. The 348/355 lasted 1989 to 1999. 360/430 is current at the moment, in their sixth year.

What about the 456GT? 1992 - 2005. Unchanged. Mechanically and aesthetically.

Lambo does it too. Diablo? 1989 - 2001. Countach? 1976 - 1989.

BMW has long model runs too. E34/E39 5-Series (E39 being a facelift of E34)... 1987 - 2004.

Whatever the 7-Series models were called (again, facelifted mid-model cycle, but still pretty much the same)... 1987 - 2001.

And I'm glad these companies do these things. Not to become souless garbage like Jap crap which introduce all new models every 2 years, completley shattering the resale value of the previous model, and distorting any face or image the company may have. This is the reason Lexus will never be like BMW and Mercedes-Benz, despite how many gadgets and gizmos they fit to their cars, etc.

Definitley not. It's not on sale anywhere yet as far as I know. Definitley not Australia!

It was either a 911 Carrera (3.6litre n/a 6cyl, 239kW 370Nm) or a 911 Carrera S (3.8litre n/a 6cyl, 261kW 400Nm).

My brother-in-laws best mate used to have a 996 911 turbo and he tells me that he's never driven anything that accelerates as fast as this thing. :

Anyway his mate then traded it on an SL55AMG and now he also has a Ferrari F430 Modena Spyder (nothing like trading up faster and faster, eh!!)

Pretty much sums up my opinion too. Amazing machines, among the best in my eyes, but they seriously need to move outside their comfort zone every now and then and play around with some new designs.. the shape is just getting a bit boring now.

Enter the Cayman S. Middle of the road between Boxster and 911.
Also the Panamera next year. 4 door V8 supercar. Cayenne Turbo. Twin turbo SUV.

Was lucky enough to test drive both last Saturday. Cayman S handled sensationally. 911 Carrera C4 just made every other car look stupid in a straight line. Have never, ever enjoyed a car more. Interestingly enough though, the Cayman and the Boxster out handle the 911 (mid mounted vs rear mounted) but you could never give up the power of the 911.

The new Turbo I believe is 347kw. I cannot begin to imagine how that would feel. The 245 odd kw of the Carrera was enough to convince me lol

Cayenne is the only one of the above you listed that move away from the normal looks.

The Panamera is different, but still looks SO MUCH like every other porsche..

Cayman, Boxster, and 911 all look very similar.

Carrera GT would be the pick of the bunch - unfortunately they are not making them RHD, so none will ever come to Australia.

I agree they are a timeless car and do look great, however having the near exact same shape for the last 5-8 years or more (I am guessing) I am at the point where every porshe I see is just another porshe, they are nothing special anymore. They still look to the untrained eye the same as they did years ago. Which means I do not get exited anymore.

On Topgear the said there was next to no chance of telling the 04 and 05 models apart even though every panel on them had been changed. I would like to see them try a bit more, why cant we see a front engined porshe again?

That looks ace, but I think I'd like that rear air intake to look a little more integrated. Perhaps its just the bright colour, but it stands out a little too much for my liking.

It's still sweeeet though.

239kW 370Nm in the Carrera 997.

353kW 680Nm in the new 911 Turbo (old one was 309kW 560Nm).
