I still believe they should offer a per KM based rego, even as an option.

For me, I work in Melbourne's CBD so i do not drive to work.
Over the year i will average around 8000km, at a stretch 9000km. Paying ~$800 a year for rego seems a bit steep when i don't drive that much.
Same with my partner's car, she only drives locally and may hit 5000km a year.

It will happen one day in the future when the majority of cars on the road are electric.
The government won't be collecting billions in petrol tax anymore so this will be the logical alternative.
