Cool, so I'll just put my smartphone in my wetsuit when having a surf.
The real electric solution gents, is to take a classic, like an XW shell - rig it with battery and electric driveline and get an 'electric car'. It will have absolutely none of all the big-brother connectivity rubbish, cost FA to run, and all the other electric cars can let their sensors and computers worry about where you are and how you are varying your speed. And, this type of electric car will have a nice, stainless steel key that goes in a wetsuit.

OK, so in the near future we will need a smartphone (or whatever) to start our cars, unlock house doors, turn on lights, and everything will be wonderfully easy and electronically voice activated, just like the Jetsons.
So, I am a dinosaur. Because I cannot see how more complicated, complex and expensive thingums are really needed to do the same job as a metal key, an index finger and a rocker switch on a wall, nor will I ever be convinced. |

You’d hope to have a supply connector accessible...

Way too simple and won’t happen.
Option 1.... Firstly you won’t have a flat battery , it will be a LVPM (low voltage protection monitor) it will lock you out so you don’t harm the rest of the fragile electronics fitted by doing something silly like actually using your car. You will have to call a specialist or a subject matter expert to evaluate the situation, likely safer to tow the vehicle to the specialist workshop for further troubleshooting and monitoring. After a comprehensive analysis they will replace the battery (which is likely OK but not according to the monitor) . The specialist may well also need do a complete diagnosis to confirm no further damage. Then you sell your left precious parts on EBay to pay for the service. Simple right? Option 2.... Apply the Arronm method and use a house brick Last edited by XByoot; 13-11-2019 at 03:14 PM. |

If your car battery or keycard battery is dead you just use the blade key to get access as you would in a car with a key for ignition and doors. Finding the key barrel on modern cars can be a bit of a challenge as some are covered up in the door handle somewhere for aesthetics.

Yep JLR's activity key is a great idea. I do yearn a bit for one when I think of this feature.

Our Renault Megane GT is same. Key slot under door handle only visible if you look under handle. If fob battery is dead, it uses close proximity RFID for recognition so you just stick the FOB hard against the start button , push starter and off you go.....

Seems like my HK Holden was ahead of it's time.
I didn't need a Key to enter or start that either. |

Pallet packing tape. Assuming the door handles don't break first.

I was an NT Publician in an earlier life.
One morning early and ol bloke came into the shop from the bowsers, where his VE Valiant was parked & he asked me for a tin of Hamper Corned Beef, which I sold him. He stripped the key off the bottom of the can handed me the full tin and headed for the car. I followed him out there thinking he wanted fuel. I asked him where he was headed, he said Darwin, go $5 worth of Super, shoved the Corned Beef key in the ignition and off they went.

Went to high school with a bloke who got his licence early in grade 12 (like myself) who had an old Corona wagon that you could unlock the doors with anything and start by putting in any key and turning... Was great fun beating him to it after school and either turning it around or moving it to a completely different street near the school...

It’s on the tangent issue of “older people vs newer technology”. An ABC local news article about a 93 year old bloke in Newcastle who’d been forcibly upgraded to a smartphone and was keen to learn how to really drive all the useful features in it - but struggled to get assistance as he was starting from absolute ground zero.
