Fact is proof is in the pudding, and the pudding has flopped.

As for the current collectors handing down to off spring. Sounds good now, but who knows what their kids gonna want when their 30-40.
We have a family member who recently inherited a number of cattle/sheep stations from his father. Now this bloke was born and raised on the land, knows little else and so it seemed like the perfect plan.
Move forward 3 years and he's ready to sell as he cant be bothered anymore.
If you asked his father 5yrs ago wether the stations would still be in his sons hands now the answer would most certainly be yes.
Unfortunately things change and not everyone shares the same passions regardless of the upbringing and influences.
It really bugs you these cars are worth so much now doesn't it... Miss out on a bargain when they were cheap did you?
The good cars still fetch good money, there was an artificial spike 18 months ago, nobody claimed it was realistic or sustainable, one thing is for sure, over the long term they wont get any cheaper so if you missed out too bad.

So true. What will be the next collectable car? Anything? I don't think the new HDT (only 250 being built) would have a chance of making it to monaro prices... and when it comes to FPV, there's nothing in there that anyone would pay over half a mill for.

I think a lot of it has to do with the romance of the beginning of the era. The legends attached to racers like Dick J and Brock... I think everything is just over commercialised now.

It's kind of like emo punk... once you start TRYING to be something, you miss the mark. The old muscle cars were about homologation to win races. These days the race cars are so far removed from the road cars, it just doesn't have the same appeal.

Did any of that make sense?

Are you sure, heres a quote from a post you made in 06

Im not that sure prices will ever drop, they will level out but look at hotrods or vintage cars for an example, a 32 roadster is worth more today than it was 5 years ago, so obviously allot of people still love old cars that were made a long time before they were born!
At least most of us can remember GT's and HO's on the roads! So i think there's quite a few more years of interest left yet, i certainly doubt a popularity drop will happen in my life time

And no, never wanted one to be quite honest, i could have bought my brothers XA Coupe, 351,fmx,9", windback roof 10yrs ago for 4k and id take a coupe over a sedan any day.

Looks like i was right, on both fronts, you're just bitter you missed out.
If you have no interest in them why the continual negative comments and fascination???

LOL, its funny isnt it Stefan.

Bent_8 has no interest in these cars according to him yet he constantly trolls any classic musclecar thread bagging them and the prices... sounds like sour grapes and jealously to me...

Always the same people with the same agendas on any controversial topic on the forum.

Some just don't realise it's been over 30 years since these were produced, supply and demand will always dictate the price, hence the cheap Yank cars, they're a dime a dozen over there.

Well, prices for XY GT's must be fairly steady at the moment - spoke to two guys at the recent Perth All Ford day - both sold their vehicles that were on display for $500k each, funny thing, both sold within half an hour of each other in the morning.

Yep, fairly predictable arent i, as predictable as you are in defending them.
Not surprising though, you guys think they're the be all, end all and i dont.

Regardless of what you think im entitled to an opinion, thats what forums are about.

I cant see how i confirmed what he said, at that time top end cars were fetching upwards of 500k, we'll see what happens in the next 12 months.

12-18 months ago people were seeing 80-100k for replicas, today AMCS has pages of replicas for sub 60k with most mint low milage genuine articles sitting un sold at around 100-120k, even less if you prefer the better looking XW.
The same trend that saw these replicas hit those figures has seen them come crashing back to earth.

hahaha...thats where i went wrong :

No probs though, the people who defend these prices usually have a list of these trophies in their signature, or regularly bang on about them.
Nothing uncommon there.
It'll proberbly get closed soon as they get a bit sensitive when ya knock em.
And its nearly always the same user.

Back on topic, looking back over the sold pages in AMCS it easy to see the gradual slide in prices as XY GT's were fetching 180k on page 30 yet the most recent sales are in the 100k region, black and white for all to see.
Not surprisingly almost all HO's sold dont list the sale price as they do with regular GT's.
Why the mystery??

It just goes to show the interest in these cars by some of the stuff that is getting thrown on here.Classic GT's will always be an asset to any Australian because they are a piece of True Blue Australian automotive history.

Does it matter though??? Those that bought at the peak and still have them have lost nothing. There are some cars out there that will always attract a premium because of combination and quality and there will always be someone out there with money and a passion.

If prices have dropped ... that is a bonus to those that do want to buy. Thats a good thing!

Its obvious some don't see there worth and just cant understand ......

my attitude is a little different to some posted here. I bought my coupe from a young bloke who had it left to him by his uncle. it was a single owner vehicle and the uncle wanted it kept in the family. the young bloke couldn't get rid of it fast enough; it was old, needed work and he wanted a commodore. obviously didn't share the passion!
I drive/own it because I like it. when I don't like it anymore I'll sell it. I do not expect to make a bucket full of money, as I just bought it because I wanted it. I do not pretend to be an expert on investments, etc. I do know what I like. It's possibly a simplistic viewpoint, but it's easy to live with.

Guys just agree to disagree and move on.

There is no doubt prices have come back from the peak - 2006 mentioned above was not it. How many cars sold in the last 12 months were forced sales? That increase of supply and 'motivated' sellers has an effect on the market. The GFC was also a trigger to take the hype out of things from the buyer's side too.

It's an analogy, you do understand what that is dont you.

Im merely pointing out that even the best intentions dont always work out. Some of you suggest that the people collecting these top end cars will never realise a loss as they will be kept forever, im just throwing up another possibility.
As i said no of us have a crystal ball so its all opinions....the basis of forums

@outback ute, fair enough, but according to some, these cars are in the hands of cashed up baby boomers, apparently they have no need to sell but as you said, peoples situations change and money in the hand is worth more than a relic in the garage.

Theres nearly 60,000 members of this forum yet its the same few who defend this subject everytime, as it happens the same few have $$ invested in them so it comes as no surprise to me.

Of those 60000 members you're one of the only ones who has a constant sook about their values too, and have been negative about this topic since joining...
So tell me, how many Classic musclecars do i own and how much money do i have tied up in them since you seem to think i've got a vested interest in promoting their values?

The theory of "speculators" stashing away countless GTs hoping to make a fortune is largely a myth. Check out who's driving the GTs at any car show for the best indication of the market. I've only been around GT clubs for the last 10-15 years, but the ownership demographics have stayed pretty constant.

The average owner is still middle aged family man with adult kids. He may have recently bought a GT after working hard in business, or he may have had it for 20+ years. The passion is still the same. These guys are not speculators. Some of them may have retired and blown some cash on a nice toy, but so what? You can bet when I'm retired I'll blow some of my money on cool toys too.

Close behind these baby boomer owners are the families with young kids. I see so many GTs with baby seats on car runs it's not funny. These guys aren't specualtors either. They've either done well in life early, inherited a car from someone, or just gotten lucky & found a bargain. If you're not always focussed on a Phase 3 there are some great GTs out there for a realistic price.

The only time I ever hear priced discussed in GT circles is when someone gets a bargain. The majority of owners (especially those who have held a car for 20+ years) couldn't care less about prices. Why would they? It's not about money.

So why are prices so high? They've always been high. The guys who bought GTs new in the 60s & 70s weren't short of a dollar. The same as 1st year apprentices don't buy new GTs now, back then a GT or GTHO was a premium car for a premium market. There was a price bubble that co-incided with the internet exposing the cars to a wider audience, but overall good cars will always demand good prices.

It does suck if you're 18 now & your dream car is a GTHO. My dream car as a kid was a Lamborghini Countach. Not all dreams can come true.
