VIC records 8,162 cases in the current period and the 10-day average growth rate increases to 1.0103 (from 0.9648) while the actual line remains about level with the predictive trend.



No states set a new daily record on 13/2.

Here is the predictive trend graph for three States based on cases since Omicron was identified which, for our purposes, will be taken as December 1st.



As it was the end of our week on Monday, here are the weekly case numbers with NSW having 1,113 more cases then Victoria last week although Victoria recorded 13,456 less cases than the previous week while NSW recorded 10,170 and Queensland 15,824 less.

NZ recorded 968 cases (+ 828 the previous day) and 0 deaths for a CMR of 0.246%.

The UK recorded 41,170 cases and 35 deaths yesterday for a CMR of 0.870%.

106,243 new cases in the USA yesterday and 1,884 deaths sees CMR at 1.190%.

Other notable points:

In Australia, COVID related deaths for 2022 have passed the total for all of 2021 with 2,385 YTD compared to 2,234 last year. Yes, that's on the back of a much higher case load of 2.537M which is 6.8x greater than the 371k for all of 2021 and that means the CMR of 0.094% is also much lower than the 0.356% last year.

Not knowing what the questions are I can at least say the drop off and pickup policy of the school my nephews go to is driving my sister crazy.

The school has instigated staggered drop off and pickup times to apparently avoid students and parents of different ages and grades from mingling.

One is in little kindy the other in grade 1. They are taught in separate buildings with entrances about 20m apart. But they would dropped off at the same place where one would be walked into kindy and the other at the main building door closest to the kindy.

But now they only have one entrance and exit for certain grades. So the little one gets dropped directly at the entrance to kindy then she has to race the other 150m to the other entrance so he arrives within his "time slot". Arriving outside that time slot is a biiiiig no no.

At pickup, even though school ends at the same time for both, there is a 40 min break between collection of the little one and big one.

So little one gets picked up and they have to wait 40 mins before the older one is released through the door 150m away.

He is not learning in that time and teachers are being used as baby sitters and unable to do work until their class is released. But because its a waste to take the little one home and return, they both remain at the school where she and little nephew mingle with other parents and kids while they all wait for other classes to be released.

It's causing no end of trouble to her work commitments and commitments to husband because he's still not back to 100% health.

Victorian secretary of the nurses’ union Lisa Fitzpatrick said that “if the private aged care sector introduced our public aged care ratios tomorrow, residents would have improved hydration and nutrition, fewer urinary tract infections that can lead to delirium and improved wound care, reduced falls, better pain relief, better palliative care and fewer preventable deaths”.

Public homes have one nurse for every seven residents during the morning, one to eight during afternoons and one nurse for every 15 residents overnight.

Victoria is the only state with a large public aged care sector. During the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, three residents got the virus in Victorian public sector aged care homes and none died. Between March and December that year, in the state’s private and not-for-profit homes, there were almost 2000 coronavirus cases and 655 residents died with the virus.

In 2021, three residents of Victoria’s public aged care homes died. This year, as the Omicron wave has torn through aged care homes killing an average of 17 residents each day, just three people in total in Victoria’s state-run homes have died.[/B]

Joseph Ibrahim, a geriatrician and the head of Monash University’s Health Law and Ageing Research Unit, said there was “widespread support for much higher pay” in the industry, and an agreement that “a minimum base level of staffing is required”.

There are 5100 residents in state-run aged care homes in Victoria and 52,575 residents in private and not-for-profit homes, solely regulated by the federal government. Since the pandemic began, 0.1 per cent of public facility residents have died with COVID-19, while close to 2 per cent have died in private homes.

There are no ratios of nursing staff to residents, or minimum standards in private and not-for-profit aged care. The recommendations of last year’s Royal Commission to Aged Care Quality and Safety to increase pay and have at least 200 minutes of care per resident per day – with 40 minutes by a registered nurse – are yet to be enacted.

Daniel Andrews has backtracked on suggestions Covid-19 booster shots would eventually be mandated for all Victorians.

Despite initially pushing for a third-jab mandate and threatening travellers would need a booster to move about the state, the Premier now concedes the measure might be impractical.

It follows Prime Minister Scott Morrison’s announcement Australia would open its borders to international travellers who had received two doses of a Covid vaccine.

Addressing the issue on Wednesday, Mr Andrews said it would become difficult if a two-dosed international traveller could enter a Victorian pub, but a local with the same vaccination status could not.

“There comes a point where things become impractical and you’ve got so many systems operating at once that it doesn’t really work,” Mr Andrews told reporters.

“Some things are workable and some things aren’t, it gets hard to justify.”
