Question EL XR6 v XR8

I was just wondering if anyone knows the differences between the 2 on the road. I know the xr6 is faster on paper but numbers sometimes don't tell the whole story as far as power delivery.
I am looking at an el xr6 or xr8(170kw) backed by the four speed auto.
Does anyone have any idea what fuel figures you get from these 2 in the real world?

Cheers

Pretty similar performance and fuel figures depending on how you drive. You'll find in the real world the XR8 will be slightly quicker. Most stock auto XR6s I've seen at the track are running mid 16s. Most stock auto XR8s will pull around 15.8 at least. I'm talking from experience.

With me driving my EF XR6 I got a 15.5 and with me driving my XR8 I got a 15.8

Both my cars are manual though. I've done a few mods to my XR8 now but I feel the XR6 is still a little quicker.

Nah, getting to old, just want to cruise now.
My last xr6 was a manual and i had heaps of trouble with the clutch and after replacing pretty much everything i still couldn't sort it out.

If you have to ask 'I6 or V8', buy the I6. They're cheaper to do basic modifications on as well.

depends on the car whats quicker.
seen stock XR6's run mid 15's in auto form, also seen them run mid 16's.
xr8's are the same deal... it just depends on the actual car you get.

if you wanna keep it a long time and mod it a lot, go the 8, if its short term, go the 6

I'm not asking which is better because i know some swear by the 8 and others the six, But because there isn't a huge difference in perfomance it is a tough decision to make.
I know the 8 is gonna drink more at the pump but i am just wondering how much more.
I know it depends on how much of a hard time you give it but i havn't owned an xr8 before and so i have no idea what sort of fuel figures they have.
I never bothered to keep a close eye on the fuel bill for my old ed xr6 but it never seemed to be over the top.

Thanks everyone for the info.

An EF XR8 would use a similar amount of fuel to your ED XR6, if driven the same way.

When mine was stock I was within a litre per 100 of my mates XR6.

Go the six, cheaper to register, insure and fix.

Thats less than i imagined, not bad at all.

It's a pity tickford didn't put the 185kw motor in all of them.

According to Ford I'm a bit wrong on the fuel consumption lol. I guess it depends on the car.

Though I would of at least thought that the manual 8 would have had better economy than the auto.

Yeah well said. You don't use your head when deciding on a V8.

i don't see how a six is quicker than an eight they might have roughly the same kw and the xr6 is lighter but i just wouldn't have the torque the xr8 has.

A V8 will use less petrol if driven the same as a 6, because of the torque it has it will pull itself more easily to get to 60,80 or 100 then what the 6 will, now my 5.0 au xr8 has 190rwkw and its an auto with a 3000stall, and drive lightly it gets the same fuel usage as my missus ef futura and its stock and has half the power and is half as slow under the right foot, but all said if i plant my foot you can watch my guage move from traffic light to traffic light, now if you want a reliable car go the 8 not saying some dont have problems but at least they dont blow gaskets like you change your clothes.

Now im going to stroke mine so i dunno how it will go after that but ill see.

Shaun.

XR6's run 3.45 diff ratios (XR8's run 3.23 until EL2), rev better and weigh (a bit) less. The E-Series Windsor HO was designed in 1986 as the 'bread and butter' of Ford US's passenger cars, not as a performance car engine. They had the Cobra motor for that.

AS EFFalcon said above, it matters more on the actual car, I ran 15.4 with a 3" exhaust, the same day other stock-ish XR6's and XR8's were running from mid 15's to mid 16's.

Every car magazine that tested the XR6 and XR8's back to back when new showed the XR6 was faster.
