Default E10 - anyone running it?

Is anyone runnign E10? If so or if you have tried it, what do you think of it?

From what I understand:

- higher octane rating but lower calorific value - slight drop in horsepower.

- more corrosive - tends to remove fuel line depsoits => keep fuel filter handy when first used. Keep an eye on injectors.

- high oxygen content => runs leaner.

- engine could be a little harder to start.

- slightly higher consumption.

What is your experience with it?

I only ever really use the united E10 Boost 98 in both the EL and AU. Get about the same economy and can't notice any difference in power, although the AU seems to ping less (poor tune) when it's running on it.

That's what I'd expect with the higher octane rating. They say it has lower calorific value but I wonder if you might even get better performance in a modified high compression engine that can take advantage of the higher octane fuel and higher peak pressures.

I'm also wondering just how economical it is. I can get it up at Coolongatta at Freedom fuel but I haven't checked out the price yet.

E10 also has a higher percentage of oxygen in it, therefore the stoich ratio is slightly lower than the 14.7:1 for regular petrol.

There was an article in Street Machine a few months ago about it, they tried E10 in an LS1 Commodore, and found nearly all of the advantage came after they re-tuned the ECU.

As a test I ran Boost 98 in my ute back to back at Calder. Versus Optimax it was consistantly down 2-3 MPH. That says it all I think.

I could feel driving it that definately wasn't as sharp as Opti.

that's where there can be some confusion. A high octane fuel or octane boost isn't necessarily better. The octane rating is a measure of the tendancy of a fuel to detonate. If you *need* a higher octane to stop pinging then you'll get better peak pressures.

The higher grade fuels often have a higher calorific value as well as a higher octane rating.

Higher octane fuels can also burn slower.

Ive used the United Servo brand of E10, cos it's 4 cents cheaper. I find without any real evidence that the tank goes alot quicker, go for a cruise and a quarter of ya tanks gone. At the end of the day I think its worth investing the extra 4 cents per ltre for standard 95oct cos it lasts longer. May be good to use every now and again to help keep fuel lines clear but other than that I dont think its worth it. Petrol companies only make it cos it cuts their costs and they make a higher profit margin off it! 10% less to make it, but 4 cents at the pump is only like a 5 or 6% discount!

I've been running the Shell Extreme (100 octane, 10% Ethanol) and my EA likes t even more then the Opti 98, or Boost or what ever the hell they are calling it now. It has helped a little bit with my pinging issues and economy is maybe a little bit better then the Opti 98.
