Might seem like a silly question, but when I was on my L's my driving teacher always told me when I pull up the had brake, I should FIRST press the button then pull it up. I know NO ONE that does. They stick their car in park and just pull it up. Is this right? I've been pushing the button and raising it, because it was how I was taught. Is either way ok? Just curious.

My instructor said the same thing, said it wears out the ratchet. In all the cars ive owned ive never had the ratchet wear out on the handbrake.

yeah, i got taught to press the button aswell. Not that it matters as i have an ED lol. But it annoys me when it makes that noise when you don't push the button.

I always push the button in before pulling up, the sound of the ratchet clicking as you reef the handle up makes me cringe.

This sounds just like the i was told about not using the indicators because it will wear out the globes :P

True or not it doesnt hurt to press the button, I was taught the same thing and as result still do it out of habit anyway.
Maybe it has its roots from really old cars and has just hung around. |

I always press the button, always have. I'm a bit like REDXR347, I don't like the sound if it's not pressed.
And like others have said, you will just save wear on the ratchet. And like has been said they aren't exactly known for wearing out, but to me anything I can do to help it (or anything for that matter) to last longer, I'll try and do it.

I got lectured by my instructor when I was on the L's. Said you pull the handbrake without pressing the button, also mentioned that you can keep doing it a few million times and it won't break.

i was told to pull up the handbrake without pressing the button so that you know it is definetly locked in as, if the button gets stuck in when ur pulling it up then the handbrake wont work....i have actually seen that happen before....btw my handbrake dont work at all so i dont even bother pulling it up anmore...no point...damn shtty handbrakes...

The handbrake is designed to be pulled up, it ensures that its locked in properly.
Having said that, I push the button in if I'm trying to be quiet, then release the button and pull it up 1 more click.

A drift button handbrake doesn't make a sound at all..!
Sometimes i press the button other times i dont..... (the xy doesn't even have a button!!!)

the ratched does break then you have no hand brake but handbrake only slow you down
 , i broke mine but it was only about 50 bucks from the wreckers for a new handbrake assembly.

Lets see in a few million km of my old man's vans, and now taxis, I've never seen the ratchet on a handbrake break. I actually cringe when people do the button-pushing thing, its just wrong and IMO you can't judge if the handbrake is properly applied or not.

I use the button and release it near the top of the pull so I can hear 2 or 3 clicks, that's enough re-assurance for me.

I had a hand me down Bluebird years ago that wore out the gears on the handbrake ratchet... previous owner always pulled it up with button out. I've always pressed the button in for reasons listed above.
The day I traded it in I parked it on the ramp of a Dealership in Melton with a block of wood holding the handbrake on! |

Could be something to do with drivers who dont know how to or have never done hill starts in manual cars.
Certainly wears the ratchet assy unnecessarily. |

I think pressing the button in while pulling it up is another example of "mechanical sympathy." Similar to not slamming your car door when you get out.
The door won't fall off if you slam it, but at the same time it's just sympathetic to the workings of the door to not slam it, the same result comes from it (the door still closes, or the handbreak still engages) just, as others said, doesn't cause unnecessary wear or damage. |
