Default Road safety officer caught doing 159kph

I bet he's having a think about how he's going to fill his contract allright.....

A road safety officer employed by three Riverina shire councils, in southern New South Wales, has been ordered to take leave until the end of the year, after he was recorded speeding near Temora.

Police road patrols clocked Bruce Barrett driving at 159 kilometres per hour in a 100kph zone between Temora and Junee on November 12.

Police suspended Mr Barrett's driver's licence and fined him more than $1,500 for speeding.

The general managers of Bland, Cootamundra and Temora councils met yesterday to discuss Mr Barrett's future employment as road safety officer.

The councils have not fired Mr Barrett, but are asking him to prepare a submission on how he will fulfil his contract in the six months that he has lost his licence.

I don't think he'll have any trouble fulfilling his contract as a Road Safety Officer from now on because he'll be perfectly safe without his car.

Its a long walk between Bland, Coota and Temora though!

Looking at this from another direction.

He is a road safety officer, therefore must be concidered by law a road safety "expert".
The police must uphold the law regardless of situation and have no descretion.
The speed limit sign placement may or may not have been decided by "experts" as they are usually implementd by public service drones.

If the above is the case then the only one with direct contact with this situation was Mr Barrett, and if Mr Barrett cannot judge whether this was a safe speed or not then what evidence is there that any of the safety officers can do so.
Furthermore should every case in which Mr Barrett or infact any council road safety officer has given evidence be re-opened?

Probably not, but the legal system is always fun when you are not involved.....

Unless he is convicted of street racing i dont think it will.

He is a safety officer he might have been testing the road for high speed travel, so they can up the limit.

Just reflects that there is more to safe speed than numbers on a speed-limit sign, as is the case here for that road.

It was once derestricted.

But, live by the BS sword, then ye shall die at it.

Now, consider this rubbish from another NSW Western Region:-
http://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2...21/2096932.htm

Quote:
Moree Plains Shire Council says motorists are continuing to travel significantly over the posted speed limit on the Newell Highway in north-west New South Wales.
Typically signposted 100 - 110km/h, no derestriction signs, yet.

Quote:
Its 'Don't be a Fool on the Newell' campaign was launched in September and has found that motorists driving on the Newell Highway are averaging speeds 10 kilometres above the sign posted limit.
This has to tell the dope that speed-limits are not necessary.

Quote:
The Moree Plains and Gwydir shires' road safety officer, Renee McMillan, says the councils have identified particular speeding hotspots near Boggabilla and Bellata.
Oh look, another socialist do-gooder.

Quote:
She says with speed a factor in most accidents they are working with police to target speeding in the area.
Yes, lets again promote boredom and fatigue through ever dumbed down speed allowances

Quote:
"It's been found so far that the majority of motorists along the Newell Highway are doing 10 kilometres more than the signposted speed limit," she said.

"This is quite significant, it's actually quite scary when you think about it because the faster you go the slower you stop and it only takes a kangaroo to hop out on the road and it could cause a major accident."
Yay yay political correctness.

Councils don't need to employ 'road safety officers', these are important matters that are best left to state resource and the commonwealth. Councils need to get back to basics.

I'd like to have been there to hear the 'Road Safety Officer' explain to the Highway Patrol that he didn't know what the speed limit was.

i averaged 130kph in 110 zone straight up and down the newell highway; one end to the other, and could easily do it with no problems, i would not think its excessive, more moderate. i have done the run over 5 times now, and always stopping every 2-3 hours for a rest and complete my halfway trip at dubbo.

most parts on the newell highway i reckon is good for over 130 though,

Sorry to any Road Safety Officers here but it is the BIGGEST bludge job I have ever seen.

When I worked for council they had some recently graduated hippie who barely showed up to work on time and when he did he was late. When the councils got amalgamated he had to work for all councils so when he showed up for work (about 2 hours late) he would grab some keys and leave saying he was "off to visit another council".

A few times I would see him at the local cafe when he was meant to be working.

The Director of Engineering always had the shits with him but he was paid by the RTA and kept because of some weird political thing.

A group of these dropkicks were the ones who invented the "pinkie ad".

My whole time at the council I never worked out what a Road Safety Officer actually did....

'Don't be a Fool on the Newell' campaign

That doesn't rhyme. It should either be: 'Don't be a fuel on the Newell' or 'Don't be a fool on the Nool.' These road safety officers sure ain't poets.

this is a quote from the 'hoon' legislation

Quote:
The legislation prohibits intentionally driving a motor vehicle in a manner that causes it to undergo loss of traction. Other offences for which drivers face car impoundment or confiscation include: exceeding the speed limit by 45 km/h or more, engaging in a race or speed trial and dangerous driving.

I maintain that if you need a speedo to drive safely, then you should not be in control of a car. Who here believes they could drive a vehicle across town, cross country for tha matter, without a speedo and do so safely? I know i can.

Speed limits are advisory speed liits are just numbers. Being a ute driver, some advisory speeds are too 'fast' - one size does not fit all. Just yesaterday on a trip back from Echuca, i was crusin on the back road fro Urana to Wagga doing about $1.20. Conditions were excellent, no traffic. Then it starts to team with rain (HOORAY). I knocked a fair amount off the $1.20 and was doing around $0.90 in a $1 zone. As the roads were dry then wet, the tration was a problem.

In VIC, they tell me to just wipe off 5 and I will be ok! What a freaking joke.

Ask your state MP for traffic if they could drive across town without a speedo and arrive safely? I asked Carl Scully once when i saw him in a shopping centre..he was lost for words then blurted "50% of all fatal crashes involve speed". I replied, wel most car accidents involve speed - there is usually at least one car actually moving!!

I know what you mean a lot of the roads I drive on it's dangerous to look at the speedo. You are too busy looking out for roos, fallen trees or sharb bends with now warning. Not to mention a lot of country roads are shocking in the wet.

The majority of cars drive 10 to 20 km/h over the speed limit on that road and that includes the RTA and police. On that stretch of road I would probably find it easier to drive at the alleged speed than below 100 km/h. Think very long straights and bland scenery. Frankly I don't understand the fuss; he wasnt even doing 100 mph and one doesn't need a long memory to remember when those kind of speeds were common place.

I'm more concerned about another road safety officer in that general area, who drives with their seat far to rearward to have proper control of the car, and never cleans the inside of their cars windows to the point that visibility is severely restricted. Of course this person doesn't speed, but that doesn't make them a safe driver.
