Default you wont believe the cost of jeep spare parts

I have replaced a few panels on my FG ute - mainly as a result of stupid kangaroos and wombats. Nice and cheap and quick to get.

I got a new jeep grand Cherokee recently and had the misfortune to side swipe a tree. Besides the fact that it took 7 weeks to get the car back due to part availability, here are some of the prices for some part according to the smash repairer

passenger side mirror - $3300 (yep - just the freek'n side mirror)
door (metal only) - $2200
side window - $1900

If this is what we are in for with american cars after falcon and commodore go it will be interesting

This is one of the reasons I got rid of a 100 series LandCruiser and bought a 2007 BF MK11 RTV.
Sounds like they have added too many zeros onto those prices,$3300 for a passenger side mirror ?????????????????????????????????????????????

I know of two people with Jeeps who've experienced the same issues, exorbitant prices and very long lead time for parts.

Should have gotten a quote first, that's ridiculous,
or is that what they are charging your insurance company as that tends to make a difference..

So you didn't actually pay $1200 as it was warranty it just showed on the invoice?
2 days to install a battery, hardly the cars fault.

sounds like your dealer is the problem

My local wanted $330 odd for a headlight globe. Then $30 to install.
Saw online a Volvo dealer wanted $800 to replace a globe.
Makes ChryslerJeep look like a bargin.

No; Chrysler 300 drivers who have to pay similar prices have already found the LHD ones are different so it wont work correctly it won't cover the correct vision area (unless you want to drive from the passengers seat). And Chrysler Jeep will explain that as they make smaller quantities of RHD cars these parts cost them more.

Ditto the headlight shine onto the wrong side of the road. And no if you turn them upside down, yes; they will shine on the right side but up into the air blinding oncoming drivers. Ours shine downward to the left LHD headlights shine downwards to the right.

I always thought buying a new car is just the entry price, the real costs come after. And I'm sure its all engineered that way to make the companies money.
The first thing I noticed years ago was the move towards bespoke headlights. remember the old 7 inch round H4 or sealed beam on so many cars. Anyone could buy one from anywhere , but if its sculpted, shaped or just enough different a monopoly exists and the manufacturer can charge what they want. Now the interchange-ability between models and even makes is ever reducing to ensure to keep your car going you have to use OEM stuff until enough are sold and they are old enough that pattern parts become available...but at what reliability price?
Its good business. and they know sometimes we have no option but to pay as most cant afford a 50K +/- to be permanently off the road for a 'only' $3300 part.
But I feel for you a Jeep mirror costs substantially more than my AU Ute and my ute does a lot more than a mirror.
I think we might start to see a backlash in a few years when people start demanding cheaper, easier to repair cars...actually that's not going to happen.

Perhaps Oz will switch to LHD and we will all drive LHD Chinese junk. We're a minority and that and costs to ship here will always make our cars and parts more expensive.:

The parts are located at the world's most remote dealer. Hence expensive and long waits.

not just Jeep but pretty much any car these days.
You guys tried to replace a windscreen with rain sensing? Doesn't matter which brand you're not looking at anything under $1500.

The mirror, expensive yes, but how many other electronics are in them these days, heated mirrors, side lamps, blind spot indicators, etc.

Make $150 for one with an indicator on the Fg seem cheap (aftermarket).

Wow, those prices are crazy! 7.5k for those 3 items. How much would the freight be? Wouldnt cost much more to send them to the Hubble. Someone`s rubbing their hands.

Whats the second-hand market like for these? Hit up an auction and buy some wrecks, or are new parts the only option for people?

Good price, i guess it varies across models.
My father's LW2 ST Focus was quoted ~1500 for one. Genuine Ford part too.

It will just get to a point where used cars will be worth nothing as it will become too expensive to fix anything on them.
People just dont realise how good we've had it with the repair/parts costs of Falcons and Commodores over the years.

My Jeep's battery died in my driveway after being away for a month without it being driven. One call to Jeep Assist and the Allianz guy turned up an hour later and fitted a new battery under warranty for me.
I know it was around the $500 mark.

Your dealer is incompetent, don't blame Jeep or the car for this.

Didn't say that, but stupidly thought that being a Ford and a similar tech it would be similar price.
We queried Windscreen's O'brien who said the price was because of the rain sensing technology.

Yea this truely is the merge into the disposable car future. You cant tell me it cost anywhere near those prices to make those parts. Its all mark up to keep lining their pockets and hopefully get you into a new car every other year. However some companies who are extending their warranties are doing the right thing.

FYI we replaced ford kuga windscreen here in NZ I think cost was NZD$1200 fitted with genuine screen.

And on top of the ludicrous spare parts cost, there's the bum puckering depreciation.

Try and trade a pre owned Jeep LOL.

Mate recently worked out his SRT cherry was not half the car of an SQ5 he wants. 12 month big banger cherry, cost him 90k and he was offered around 45 trade. Ouch.

The Audi on the other hand, they might cost 100, but 12 - 18 month old ones are swapping hands for mid to high 80's.....
