Hello Ford fanatics, I have a problem. Purchased a 2nd hand 2008 Focus privately about 2 months ago. Excellent car with only 60K on the clock. Since week 3 the key did not turn all the way through to starter motor ignition. Sometimes it took 3/4 turns, some slow some fast to get the key to go right to stage 3 and kick over the engine. I thought this might have been a safety thing.. like foot on the clutch or foot on the brake to start the engine. Now the key does not turn to stage 3 at all. (sometimes after 15 mins of repeated turning it magically turns all the way). Any thoughts?? Is this a known Focus or Ford problem with the ignition / key barrel. Many thanks in advance.

Had this problem but it turned out to be a bur in the key itself not the barrel try the second key to see if it has the same problem if not the primary key may need a light buffing

Problem Sorted. It was the "Key Switch".
Called RACV told me to ctc a Locksmith who specialises in vehicle locks. Called a locksmith told me it sounded like the key switch.. "ohhh, a 2008 focus you say. You will need to go to a dealer or a really good mechanic. They will need to replace the whole steering column. I recon about a $1000". Went to Westpoint Ford in Hoppers Crossing. Ignition barrel in stock, 30 mins later and $40 for the part. Got out of it for just over $100. Very Happy. |

We have the same problem with our 2010 Focus. Did you require new keys with the barrel.
