Default LSD Diff oil

Just wonderin what oil and or additive people are using in there lsd diff's??? mine has a bit of noise, a bit like the backlash noise when driving slow (car parks) have read on here people using addatives that work but cant find it now. would love to use mainlube but its a bit pricey for me if thats not the problem. just tryin to find if its the oil, driveshafts (mine is IRS) or the diff, and takin it into a diff shop will more than likely bring up a list longer than my arm (probably half of dont need) and want my first forn child (sometimes not a bad idea). thanks in advance

Isn't the noise/clunk standard from factory?
I've recently put in Fuchs LS 80w-90, as I get it cheap thru work. Still smokes up both the rears so no complaints.

man are you sure its 80w-90? I have an AU2 5 speed XR6 and I just changed my diff oil on the weekend and put Castrol LSX 85-140 in it... 80w-90 sounds way too light.

I had some type of Fuchs in it before that i put in about 6 weeks ago, but it made the diff really noisy. now that i have changed to the 85-140 it is less noisy but it is still there, which is why i stumbled on this thread, im looking for an additive to quieten it down? does one exist?

also, does your ute really have 625000km on it? mine has 210,000 and is starting to give a few problems.

Yeah I thought 80w-90 was a gearbox oil. The 140 sounds about right

I have Castrol SAF-XA in mine with no other additives and am very happy with it. I dont think it had ever been changed prior to that and there was a noticable improvement.

Yep I have used a 90 weight oil in the diffs of all my Falcons and 4wds with no worries. Also used to run all work Hiluxs on Shell LS90 again with no problems.
Yeah closer to 630k now, if mileage doesn't get the better of it then age will so expect some problems on a 10+ year old car.

i've just recently put a dose of penrite limslip 90 in mine about 2000 k ago .feels as good as it ever has.
what ever you do don't put any of those "ford recommended additives" in it .it will turn it from an lsd to a single spinner in seconds.
a nice tight diff will chatter on tight turns oooh yeaah.

Penrite Sin80 in mine as well. LSD works perfect and the diff is quiet as, even with the extra torque of a 347 stroker up front.

I've used it in the XR8 and it's good stuff. Going Liqui Moly this time around but back to Penrite after that - very, very happy with their products.

Does that mean I should change from 5w 30?

Get yourself a cartridge filler from supercheap (round metal tube with flex hose at one end and a puller/pusher handle at the other). makes the job heaps easier, but is still messy and smelly.

Reaper - How're those rims going? Got centrecaps for them yet? Haven't seen any pics of them on the car yet..........

well changed the diff oil today, god that stuff is thick. i used a 2ltr coke bottle and screwed a male fitting into the cap with some old air hose on and ran that into the diff, then i got some smaller hose (think it was wiper fluid hose) and put that into the base and hooked it onto my blower gun. turn it upside down a couple of squirts of air into the bottle and watch it go. took it for a drive and is quiet as a lamb, now all i need is to get bottom control arms and do this front brake upgrade. thanks all

When you get under the diff the drain plug is the biggest bolt in the centre of the housing at the bottom if that makes sense. Undo that and have a pan ready, it will also stink worse than a turkish cabdriver so be prepared. Once it's drained out do the bolt up and undo your filler plug which is a 29mm socket from memory, fill it up with the specified amount and then you're done.

Hmm, I've always wondered whats the difference between this fluid and the Nulon synthetic equivalent, apart from the fact the above is not synthetic and it cost less then half the amount...

The specs on the front of the bottle appear to be the same...

For the guys using sin80 you will be even more impressed with Redline 75w90full synthetic.I changed to this recently and for the street its much better, yet to use it at the track but the Tailem Bend 1/8th mile day on 21/8 will let me know.

If you want to flush it Damo then get some Shell Helix 20w50 oil and run it on stands at idle to 2000rpm variations for 10 minutes, watch how black it comes back out.

synthetic oils dont burn. were as a mineral oil does. i assume that is the difference?
