OOPS, 3 wheels on ya wagon!
Someone tried to steal your wheels, got interupted, left them loose and the studs sheared off as you drove. Failing that, the tyre shop/mechanic left them loose.

Well, from personal experience, you had the wheel off for whatever reason (new tyre perhaps), put it back on but forgot to tighten the bolts. Wheel came undone and car scraped along the road.

Note: 3 wheel cars stop far slower than 4 wheel cars.

This is how my poor XR8 ended up grinding to a halt this morning on the way to work.

My diff had started clunking like mad, usually when slowing down, or going around decent sized round-a-bouts so I took it into Ford for them to check it out. Was told I'd be getting a new diff and that other work I was scheduled to have done would be performed together when the new diff arrived.

I didn't drive the car for a week after that and have been driving it for a week since, waiting for a call. During that week the noise at the rear became more pronounced and was happening more often, including a grinding sound when going slow at car parks. To me, the diff was just falling apart in there and was getting worse.

Yesterday driving home from our Show n Shine it was quite bad at the back and I wondered when the diff was gonna blow.

As I'd heard nothing and things were sounding quite bad I rang the dealership at 7.30 this morning before I left to tell them how bad it was and what I could do. The nice guy looked into it and advised me my diff had arrived Friday and he could book it in for Thursday at the earliest. I asked but was told it couldn't be done any earlier.

So, I set off for work, hoping the diff would hold out until Thursday, but since yesterday I'd decided our 7mo daughter wouldn't be riding in the car until it was fixed, though she had ridden in it on Friday night.

Going to work, the car felt so bad I changed paths from the highway to work, to suburban streets to the dealer. I was just going to show up and advise I can't drive this car another day the way it was.

To me it sounded like the diff was going to fall apart and grind itself into oblivion. Instead, after another km, I made a slow right turn and to my suprise the wheel parted ways with the car and it all came to a halt.

Wheels dont come loose by themselves. Someone didnt tighten the nuts or dileberatly loosened them.

so the wheel nuts threaded the studs ??

or did they all fracture and snap ?? as someone said they look short in that pic

looks like a new set of DBA's could be on the cards... The IRS may well have lessened the damage though as far as dispersing the weight of the car, over a live axle.

after the first loud grind i would of parked it at ford and told em to fix it

nothing worst then driving a car knowing it isnt safe
but hey could of been worst you could of been on a hwy when it happened with your little one with you.

yeah i know that aswell from experience but i lost mine on a dirt road, i had a 300m walk and a short swim to get mine though....

Basically, someone at Ford did not do my wheels up tight enough, but due to the diff on the way out, I assumed all the noise was the diff, as I'd never driven a car with a falling apart diff or wheels that were loose before.

It would clunk, I thought my diff was busted but it was a loose wheel. I caught the problem before the wheel fell off tho.

im surprised you couldn't feel the horrible shudder that comes with loose wheel nuts!
when mine were only finger tight it wobbled like all **** and i could tell as soon as i hit 60kph that something was seriously wrong!!
i hope ford come to the party, they did for me when they put my belt on wrong and it idled like crappola and wore a huge groove into the water pump..

take the photos into ford with you and tell em the whole story.. your frequent calls to them will help your case alot me thinks.

They are going to fix it. I'm not sure what damage has been done, but the IRS took the hit and got dragged along, but I've no idea what else could be damaged from something like this, but they are going to fix it.

I'm going to ask for a list of what is replaced/fixed. A new wheel is also definitely on the cards.

yeah some new link pins and bushes will also definitely be on the cards!! i'd imagine it would have damaged the sway bar itself too, along with a few other things.

Almost looks like one of those new see-through wheels vic - u jinxed yourself after yesterdays conversation, sorry to see this happen, almost happened to mine a few months ago when some banana didn't do up the rear wheel and my engine builder was doing a tuning run up the parkway, they hit 130 before his son in law said the rearend was moving too much - the studs were half off, could have been some major carnage, your lucky the speeds u were doing were no where near that.
oh well, time for new brakes and wheels all round - u were gonna do it anyway.
