Default cam and chip

good morning all

Ive been recently looking into getting an HP4 cam and chip kit from Chiptorque

http://www.chiptorque.com.au/Ford/EF4.html

As you can see though the fitted price of the kit is $1750 for a gain of 15-20rwkw.

I am just wondering if better gains can be had by choosing a different cam and having them make up a chip for it. I have asked them about the specs of the crow cam they use but im still waiting for a reply.

It seems that people are getting gains of 20 rwkw without chips. Yes i understand chips are used for more than just power gains.

so, Would i be better choosing a brand other than crow and getting a custom tune to suit? or is their package the ducks nuts that shouldnt be changed?

cheers
Tim

I'd imagine that is for a custom tune with it? Personally I'd probably take a different route.

you will get better gains with a better cam. the question is is how big do you want to go? is it a daily driver, does the idle matter, do you do alot of H/W driving, what do the revs sit at at 100km/h, what are you future mods ect.

shop around and ask plenty of questions. see what cam grinders recommend. don't just go out and by a cam that people say is good.

It is a daily driver, bugger all highway, from memory about 2.5g at 100km. Its an EF xr6 so it has 3.45 gears. Cam and chip are my planned future mods. I dont mind a lumpy idle

Nothing wrong with listening to the people, after all theyre the ones driving the cam'd up fords.

guess ill do more reading

cheers

For those who might be interested, the profile they use in the HP4 package is a crow 2222549.

i used a 2222543 without a chip in my rebuild and only got 178rwhp. i'd be looking at a 2222546:

I would seriously look at having your existing xr6 cam reground... only a couple of hundred for a regrind and shims... then you can go get a chip of some description. Certainly wont cost $1750 if you do the bulk of it yourself.

EB pete, ive been following your experiences with 2222543. Just about any search with the word crow brings up a topic of yours.

The 2222546 looks like a pretty big cam. What sort of power,1/4 times could you expect from this cam with a chip? Standard 5sp EF xr6 with exhaust/k&N.

i assume standard fuel system will handle this?

cheers

yeah i get a good discount buying crow gear. i'd say with the 2222546, vernier cam gear, springs matched to the cam and a chip torque chip, you should be getting it down the 1/4 high 14's? what sorta extractors you got?
