Aftermarket water gauge not working..

Hi, have a aftermarket water gauge on my mk2 escort and it's not working.. No cable connections just a connection straight to the engine. Just want to replace the gauge and curious if disconnected I'm guessing water is goin to **** out?? Do i need to drain the radiator?
