Default Skyline/Pintara diff gears on an AU

Has anyone actually fitted these gears into a Ford Borg Warner 78 series diff set up? I heard you could but then I rang up two different diff places and they told me that you couldn't as the diff is the same but the set up is different. I think the pinion heights are different? Can anyone clarify this? Has anyone succesfully done the transplant onto an AU?

I am also interested in this, I wanna go to 3.9s from 3.7s and wondering if it could be done on the cheap. I heard pintaras have 3.9s and 4.11s gear ratios fitted, not 100% on that.

Well if the AU diff is the same as a EA or a EL diff then yes the pintara gears fit .
but like all diffs you will still need to shim it up right

I've had 3 Skylines and a Pintara (all R31's) and they all had whiney gears. I don't think I've ever driven one that didn't whine. I think I 'd prefer to spend a bit more and have a quiet diff in my AU.

Yeah i'd love to spend a bit more too, maybe I should start up a donations thread because it costs $1600 for new gears or $400 to do it with second hand ones.

Anyone that can justify spending that $1200 extra on a car with an agreed insurance value of $7500 should please PM me immediately as you obviously have way to much money.

$1600 for new gears?

I got quoted much less for new gears fitted from a local Geelong diff place.

That's how much I was quoted by G&D. I rang up central diffs and they told me it couldn't be done at all, impossible. This other joint in bayswater said exactly the same thing.

I then rung up G&D and told them the story and they said it would cost me $1600. Then Northern Diffs said that it was possible and that he'd done it. The reason why it was hard was because they were BW 75 series in R31's and 78 series in post XF falcons.

Then rung up Victoria diffs in mitcham and was quoted $290 fitted if I bring the gears. Then rung up the wreckers and got quoted $110 for the R31 diff. $400 all up, drive away.

So basically unless the price you got quoted was a minimum of $1000 less than G&D there is no way in hell I would ever pay that money.
$1000 more than gets me a new cam, springs, vernier gear all installed and a retune. The left over cash will mean i'll only be about $1000 off the manual conversion installed and then my work is complete.

Hmm didn't even think of chrysler and stuff. Bet parts don't come cheap off them because of their rarity though

Everyone I've known thats put 75 gears into 78 diffs has ended up with a noisy, peice of rubbish diff thats lasted 2 weeks at best.

$400 might get you some gears fitted, bet won't last a month. Less if you hard on it.

Why should a car's value have anything to do with how much money you sink into it?

Sorry mate.

The value of the vehicle had got a lot to do with it. If the car was still going to worth something then I might invest in new gears, but if i'm spending $1000's of dollars on a car that's only ever going to be worth $7500, no matter how much money I put into it, its not worth it, I may as well just go out and buy a better car.

Say for example my car gets stolen and i've put $10,000 in parts and labour into it. I'll only get $7,500 back, that doesn't cover the mods, let alone buying a new vehicle, same as if my car gets written off.

I'd prefer to save that extra money and put it aside for a better car down the track.

As for just leaving it alone. I wan't the diff gears and I can justify $400, thats easy, but I can't justify spending $1600 when the job could have been done for $400.

What you can justify is totally up to you and your own circumstances. Nothing wrong with that.
Just be aware that you really do get what you pay for with cars and, often enough, doing a second hand or "shortcut" mod can create issues that cost you a fortune (or at least more than the original "done right" cost) later down the track.

But then there is also the arguement that what the car is worht to an insurance company is not as great as what the car is worth to you. You could also use a specialist insurer like shannons and insure it with all the mods for an agreed value thus making the vehicle worth more than $7500. By your rationale no one would ever mod their car as they would never get their money back on it.

i had some 3.89's fitted to my car about a year ago . it only cost me $330 fitted.i assume there just old ricer diff gears .i have given it a fair bit of a flogging over the last year and i tow a trailer for work .they seem to go alright ,they are a tad whiney but nothing worse then the poor old gearbox.
like they say you get what you pay for.

They must not know anybody that can build a diff then.
I have built diffs ... have even reco them at work...and even after all this time they are still going ....
BUT I did not build my diff .
4.11 b/w gears new 350$
Bearings and 3 seals 120$
labor 450$
I went to see the oldest mechanic in my town ... face it they have forgotten more then most people will know about cars .. and I got him to build it for me.... that was 4 years ago ... I just put new axles into it as I twisted the stock ones after 40,000km (hard kms) with the new axles I put in seals as well ... since then I have done normal everyday driving and 19 1/4 mile drags and over 30 1/8 mile drags and my diff is still going strong and quite ...

You get what you pay for ... always remember that

Where did you get the gears from? Did you just ring up BW? Would love to get a set for that price

When i got my 3.9 for my eb diff almost every place in perth said it couldnt be done but i found out its not easy because the pinion needs to be shimmed heaps because it doesnt sit at the stock height or similar.
guy who did mine said the pinion needs to be played with for ages, basically put it in take it out etc.
Next time id do it myself because my brand new gears whine anyhow after i paid them 1250 to do the job with bearings and seals supplied by me
Just do it yourself get some shims and bearing blue/gear paint and have a good old crack.
