Default Chips And Insurance.

After talking to the major insurance companies today I was surprised that a chip is ok for insurance with the exception of turbocharged cars!!!
So I made this post so many people dont sweat on it.

I was surprised that they are ok.So hopefully a chip is in for many of us.

RACV are fine with it too. Its not seen as a performance enhancing mod, just a mod. No different to getting slotted rotors or a big stereo.

If you have an engineering and or ADR compliance certificate, your insurance company will insure your car with anything on it...
6 months back there was a member here his turbo car was written off, he went down to the holding yard and took off all his goodies and the chip with his insurance company's blessings.

Not exactly true Mark. I asked RACV if they would insure my car if I had an engineer certified and ADR complianced supercharger on it. They laughed at me. Same as Budget Direct. They wouldnt even insure aftermarket rims on my car.

from speaking with RACV they do allow most modifications, provided you advise them. Chip no problem, CAI they call it an engine intake, but again no problem.

Exhausts are referredto as Sports exhausts, but they are an interesting one as provided they do not exceed EPA guidelines they are OK, but if you exceed EPA guidelines they you immediately void your insurance.

The two main mods they will not accept are turbos and supercharges. Either of these immediately voids your insurance.

So if you had a zorst that ran way over the leagl limit and you wrote your car off in a big way how will they know. Will they rip it off and put it on another car.

Don't know, but in theory it is another way they could potentially opt out on you.

Yeah some companies are ok with a set limit of mods irrespective of what they are, some are more strict.

I know ages back I was looking to insure my ED Fairmont and they said if it had a sports exhaust they'd knock me back just like that.

You just gotta shop round and get the feel for who does what.
