Default au auto question

how does the auto know when to shift? i mean is it a set rpm or throttle in relation to rpm?

It has got to do with 2 things.

-Engine load, TPS takes over from the kickdown cable.
-speed sensor on trans tells the ecu to slot box into appropriate gear via solenoids.

how does having a diffrent diff ratio effect it?
can the shift points be changed?
