Do Ford Foci (specifically LS) have fuel sender units??? I have heard of this device in certain threads or is it the same as a fuel pump???
and how do you know which is not working??? Thanks! |

A fuel sender unit is used to measure the amount of fuel in the tank and then sends that information to the gauge cluster.
In older times there was either a simple dipstick or you just looked inside the tank. They then migrated to a float on a shaft with a variable resistor that changed the electrical current sent to the gauge which acted like a voltage gauge to display a reading. These days they are often an electronic card integral with the fuel pump but rather than sending data to he gauge it i fed to the ECU as a value which it convrts and sends to the gauge cluster. In the case of your Focus tis is exactlywhat happen and in diagnostic mode you can see the vaue (between 1 and 255) that is being sent to the ECU. Perhaps we were better off with the dipstick? You will know when its not working when you fill up the tank and the fuel gauge doesn't move. Turn the engine off and wait and it might move. If the tank is full and the gauge hasn't moved you will run out of fuel if the tank was low when you refueled.
Eventually we managed to get it to the ford dealer with a full tank when the gauge was not measuring. The car was under warranty and the entire cluster was replaced. |
