Drunk street racing hoons jailed

I really feel for the poor taxi driver, they don't earn much to begin with and have to put up drunken idiots and now this poor bastard can't even do that because two hoons thought street racing was a good idea and on top of that thought it was a good idea to do so while under the influence of alcohol.

I just hope the Falcon driver never drives a car, let alone a Falcon again.

A pair of Brisbane road hoons has been sent to jail after a street drag race left a taxi driver seriously injured.

Liam James Hanna, 21, of Tingalpa, and Matthew Peter Boland, 28, of Wishart, were both drunk behind the wheel when they made a snap decision to race each other along Mt Gravatt Capalaba Road at Wishart on April 11, 2006.

Brisbane's District Court heard the pair had reached double the 60km/h speed limit when Boland decided to pull out of the contest.

Hanna, however, continued to speed around a bend and eventually lost control.

An oncoming taxi, being driven by Jaswant Singh, was hit after Hanna's Ford Falcon struck a concrete traffic island and became airborne.

Mr Singh, who had just clocked off duty for the night, suffered spinal injuries and a badly broken leg. The court heard that as witnesses went to the cabbie's aid, Hanna fled the scene.

He returned a short time later after Boland went to find him and bring him back.

The younger man recorded a blood alcohol level of 0.141 - almost three times the legal limit.

Boland, who also admitted to driving drunk, blew .084 when tested two hours later.

Both men pleaded guilty to dangerous driving under the influence, and Hanna of causing grievous bodily harm.

In sentencing the men this morning, Judge Kerry O'Brien described their actions as "irresponsible and reckless".

He ordered Hanna serve nine-months of a total three-year sentence while Boland will be released from his 18-month term in November this year.

Outside court, Mr Singh said the incident had had a major impact on his life and had cost him a significant amount of money in lost income.

at least one of them had the courage to fess up to it and help the guy not run away.

at least we know one of them had some sort of morals i suppose.

Once again the courts hand out a slap on the wrist.
Not only is Mr, Singh still carrying severe injuries and is unable to work ... he's lost his cab, his house, his family, his ability to earn a living. He'd forgotten his cab insurance and it ran out the day these dropkicks ran into him. So he had to sell his house to pay out the finance on his non existant cab. His other problems compounded from this situation.
Those mongrels should have got fair dinkum jail time.

reading it only one of them caused the crash as it's says Mr. Boland pulled out before the crash took place, yes he was still driving drunk but it seems as if he still had a few brain cells working in his head, this guy also retrieved his mate after he had fled the seen and came back with him and stayed around to face the music, even thou he hadn't caused the crash and could have just about got off if he wasn't breathalysed.

So really only one guy is the real big idiot hear, as he kept accelerating even after Mr. Boland had backed out of the race.

They're both idiots, if neither of them had been on the road after drinking, and neither had decided to race it never would have happened.

if cab insurance is anything like car insurance then you still have 14 days cover after it expires..

good on mr boland, defn a better person than the other guy..

They were both drink driving, speeding.

They should have to do the whole whack, no probation

I'm not so sure if the other guy who decided to back is as good a person as is suggested - my guess is he was just the more intelligent of the two and clearly realised that if they ran, it would be far far worse for them when the cops did inevitably catch them. May not have actually be remorse but rather a calculated way of avoiding even more trouble.
