Default Big steaks in Victoria

Hey guys, I'm looking for pubs/restaurants that serve big cuts of steaks, I've recently done the 1KG Rib eye at the Vic Tavern in Gisborne (only the second person to order it) and finished it with a side of chips . I'm particularily interested in those places where you get your name on the wall if you manage to eat their biggest steak.

Steer bar and grill in South Yarra looked ok until I saw their prices, some of their bigger steaks are well into the $200 range.

Is there anywhere in Victoria which does this?

Lets see your suggestions

This was the first in the quest to climb the ladder:

(Spoils of victory on the table in the background, I got like $30 in bets that I couldn't do it from mates)

Unfortunately chips not in the picture, they were on a separate plate.

For me, steak has to be served with chips and a glass of coke, none of this green crap should ever touch the side of my beautiful steak.

I've been buying that smoked hickory steak sauce from Hogs Breath for a while now...you buy it at the counter where they have the merchandise, and you can just walk in off the street and buy it as well, you don't have to actually be a customer. Brush it on a steak before cooking and leave it for a while, then cook. Amazing stuff...and you avoid the price Hogs Breath charges for a steak...

How did you order it, rare, medium rare, etc? The 1kg is, of course the uncooked weight, cooked medium you probably only get 700g which includes the bone.

I'm in Gisborne Sunday, so I think I know where lunch will be

ahhhh a subject i can sink my teeth into hahahaha......i was a chef in a past life so i get pretty fusy when i eat out especially when it comes to cooking steak,so if i want a nice steak i cook it at home on the charcoal webber with water soaked hickory chips to give it that awesome smokey taste. The secret to a nice steak is to buy whole cut cryovac meat{the vacuum sealed stuff** coz it tends to be much more tender than fresh cuts nowdays which is butchered & shipped without enough time to hang to get it tender. The other single most important thing with cooking a nice steak is to seal it on both sides,& keep turning it over every few minutes & dont use marinades/sauces because it just burns & ruins the flavor of the meat.

Ribs and Rumps if you can find one.

1kg rump + full rack of pork ribs + two sides challenge. Half hour to eat.

I had dinner at Cutler & Co in Gertrude St. Fitzroy, (near Royal Exhibition buildings) last year and they had a monster rib-eye (1.2 or 1.3kg) I went for the "smaller" Wagyu, but saw a guy at nearby table with the monster steak, and NO possible way could I tackle it!

Nice bit of meat you have there, but looking at the plate and meat that wouldnt be 1kg , Id say 700-800 at best would be great if it were 1kg cooked.

Ive seen and had 1kg steaks overseas and you know whens its 1kg.

But well done and most important as long as you enjoyed thats all that matters.

I have my steak cooked well done.

Now no one give me lip about how it "ruins" steak, you aren't eating it for me so leave me in peace.

The Vic Tavern is right opposite Coles in Gisborne, there is also Maccas and a car wash down the same road.

We all thought I would have been, but I was fine with no problems. Just feeling really full the next day still, that feeling you get when you eat too much, and some intergestion.

I have my steak cooked well done so no doubt it would have shrank from its original size.

The girl behind the register at the Vic Tavern goes to me, that is going to be a very expensive dinner if you can't finish it....

Then when one of our friends joined our table, the girl behind the register goes to her:

OMG you're on the same table with the guy eating the 1KG steak!

It was like being treated like royalty, they even offered to cut it up into pieces for me, but I declined for photo opportunity purposes.

Now now Damo, you can't say that and expect no-one to have a poke at it.

Wasn't it chewy to eat having been cooked for that long?

How on earth could you finish that in half an hour! The ribs alone take a good 25 mins to eat thoroughly without choking! haha

My mouth is currently watering from this thread. May have to go to Hurricanes Grill soon. Used to love the Hickory smoked steaks from Hogs Breath but the last 4 times I've been it was terrible - not worth the $50pp it turns into.

Nah, it was quite tender, I guess it depends on how they cook it, for example well done at the Skyways Hotel in Airport West is pretty dry and tough, but at the Vic Tavern its tender and still no sign of pink inside the steak.

Meh, its kinda big lol. Was it a starter? haha.

My biggest, the SSS shank challenge. 2.4kg shank, bowl of chips, bowl of salad, 12 calamari rings and a strawberry sunday. Plus 6 cups of coke to wash it down.

Done in 55mins. The lot of it! Was a few years ago now.

Also in Lilac City steakhouse in Goulburn, I had a crack at the 2kg big daddy rump they have there. Wasn't what I would call a challenge but it was a filling meal lol.

Also have done the 30cm burger from Killer Burger.

I'd love to do a Man vs Food Aus! lol But, and no joke, im on a diet lmao.

this is my kind of thread.

I know you can eat a 2kg steak here at a place in the northern suburbs of Adelaide. Each person that finishes what ever is on the plate gets their meal for free. Or so I hear.
