Distance to Christmas Island
So I'm just wondering what distance the average Australian thinks Christmas island is from mainland Australia?
Now, before replying, don't cheat and google it, just pick which number is closest to what you thought. The results may astound you! |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
Christmas Island's relative proximity to mainland Australia isn't any of the distances you're listed.
Maybe you should correct the poll and update the list in ascending order too. Also you could ask what is the nearest country to Christmas Island, and the distance to that country. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
They're only rough figures.
One is within 50km according to google (yes I used to make sure I was in the ballpark myself) |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island

I'll keep the same options though, as the correct one is still closer than the others. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
So I guess the poll has turned into a bit of a flop then, since I stuffed up the distances.
The reason for it was I just recently found out just how far offshore Christmas Island was, I always assumed it was a few hundred kms at best, but 1500 from Exmouth (1900 from Broome) is a long way, that makes it only a few hundred kms from Indonesia. It was a moment of clarity for me is all and was curious if my fellow citizens knew just how close it was to Indonesia and why it's such a tempting target for our boat friends. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
Silly me.
Confused that with Easter Island hehehe You know, the place with the large stone heads. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
Christmas Island is where Santa goes for holidays right?
Right????? |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
Don't get me wrong, I like the poll, but I also like accuracy
I have voted to the nearest distance. :evill |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
This is a pretty silly thread. I mean, everyone know that Christmas Island is next to the North Pole.

Re: Distance to Christmas Island
The distance from Christmas Island to Australia is 0 kilometers.
It is way too close in anyones measure. So is PNG for that matter . |

More along the lines of this thread possibly being posted with an agenda in mind, so trying to lighten it up before it turns way to political for this forum. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
It amuses me when they say the Navy is responding to a distress call and are searching waters 1200 km off shore from Australia, when they could say 120km from Indonesia.

Re: Distance to Christmas Island
Maybe the question should have been - to the nearest Capital City of mainland Oz. Hence my answer.
....and I see I was wrong re: Perth |

If the vessels are in Australian territorial waters, and Christmas Island is an Australian territory and the information is being relayed to civilians on mainland Australia... it makes no sense to quote the distance relative to Indonesia. It's like quoting the distance to Sydney from Perth relative to New Zealand. Makes no sense. |
Re: Distance to Christmas Island
all the issue could be averted if we just gave the friggin island to Indonesia...
