What happened to those hard licorice squares? :(
Hello guys,
I'm hoping you can help me, used to be able to get a pack of hard licorice squares from the local servo, it was flat, moulded into 6 squares in a clear packet, and hard as a freakin' rock (like nearly break your teeth hard). I haven't been able to find them anymore, I'm trying to find pictures of them but I'm not having any luck. Looks like this: http://eduudle.com/wp-content/upload...dy-700x470.jpg But flatter, maybe 3mm thick. Hopefully you guys know what I'm talking about. |

Some Coles stock it in the international section, in the Dutch part. Pick the right one though, one is salted.

Inch licorice, that's what I remember it being called, sometimes see it for sale at servos and newsagent around here.
I normally don't fancy licorice much but this stuff is pretty good. |

Re: What happened to those hard licorice squares? :(
When I worked in a soft drink factory, one of the ingredients in the Sarsaparilla was licorice. It came in a cardboard box, about the size of two house bricks. The stuff was literally hard as a rock, glossy black, and to get pieces off you had to hit it with a hammer whereupon it would shatter like glass. You had to put it in heated water to soften it.
Interestingly over a period of months it would start to "sag" in the box as it sloooooowly flowed downwards under gravity. After about a year it was rounded all around the edges |

Now this is a first tier mystery worthy of further investigative endeavour Big Damo, almost on par with the rapid decline of cobbers and choo choo bars, none of which I have seen in the wild this century!
God speed in fulfilling your long and arduous quest for those delectable culinary delights and should you find that which your heart desires, see if you can find me a Golden Gaytime (now, now! :raisedeye) from the seventies... |
Re: What happened to those hard licorice squares? :(

Re: What happened to those hard licorice squares? :(
USA Coke and the Aussie variant are different, ours is made with cane sugar but not sure on changes over the years.
Majority of USA soft drink has moved to HFCS instead of cane sugar like our stuff as its cheaper. But gives me stomach problems, I bought 10 slabs of Dublin Dr Pepper made with cane sugar rather than HFCS after they couldn't export it anymore legally. |

I've still got 6 slabs left. The HFCS variant is no good. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dublin_Dr_Pepper I wont drink the last can when I eventually get down to it, I'm going to keep it. |

What's the deal with salted licorice? I've never tried the salted variety.
