Default Website hits??What do they mean?

I am a bit confused .What does it mean that my website is getting 4000 hits a month? Is this good?Is this bad?

The number of hits is probably only one way i would look at it as a judgement of if it was good or not.

For example if a site had 2000 views and sold say 20 times
this gives a 1% effective figure.

However if a site has had 1000 views and has had 20 sales from that the effective strike rate is now 2%

A small example i know but your bottom line has to be a factor in the how good it is.

Further to that is repeat / referal sales from past customers this would also be an important factor in my final way up in how good the result was.

just my 2c

Pete

Thats fair enough. The way I look at it too is that it cost me 29.95 with optus to have it there and did 4000 wirth of sales last month. So it has paid for itself .Whts spookier is that I have not entered all of my products list yet.

A very valuable 2c worth too!

It's all bottom line, but not always easy to quantify, many customers will use web as a comfortable non itrusive way of researching product etc, yet still feel more comfortable on phone or face to face for an actual transaction. So a web site becomes a necessary evil. But if its not doing something for you its dollars down the drain.

A good set of website statistics can show which bits of a web site work and equally importantly which don't. You can do demographics of your users, see which products attract attention etc.

But all these things are just tools, it takes more than just web-hits to bring the $$'s rolling in.

Register the domain houseofdominanceandcarkits.com and you will up your web hits but you wont see any improvements on the bottom line.

'hits' isnt a very good way to measure the sites traffic though.
i beleive a hit is any time *any* part of the page is accessed, meaning a pic download, a website view.
so if u look at 10 different pages on that website, you will get 10 hits on the counted, ofcourse this depends on how the hit counted is setup and software.

heres some info for www.deleted link
Server Uptime: 2 Days 03 Hours 27 Minutes 20 Seconds
Hits: 3028
Error Hits: 306
HTML Hits: 1265
Not Modified Hits: 149
Output (Kb): 138207

The single number hit counters are pretty meaningless. but when you can compare those that have actually read a site, and those that have looked and said "no thanks".

What browsers are used, what sites are referring links, what pages are viewed, what operating systems a reader uses, countries of origin, its all there. And the phrases people quote into search engines to ultimately reach your sight can be a good giggle.
