1990 TX3 vs 1996 Corolla

Hey guys.


Got a lil dilemma on our hands. Trying to decide which car to keep for missus to drive.

I purchased a KF2 TX3 turbo AWD. Missus has a 96 corolla.

Both are dead stock no mods what so ever. Both will be staying dead stock.
2dr/4dr thing is not an issue. She doenst drive many kms. Maybe 20k a year if we take it on holidays (which we wont be soon as i will have comapny vehicle lol).

We will only be keeping EITHER car 3yrs MAX and upgrading to family car.
Laser has 170,000kms on it.
Corolla has 220,000kms on it.

Advantage i see is I have a KH2 TX3 and know the cars resonably well now. But dont know corolla at all.

But what would have better resale value in few years time.

I think the laser would be a slightly safer car being 4wd and a lil bit more go for passing etc.


Any opinions wanted.

And if anyone interested in a 96 coralla or 90 tx3 awd lol let me know.

When it comes to safety, I think that the option wasn’t available with either car so I wouldn’t base any decision on that alone. The Toyotas have a great reputation for reliability and are relatively cheap to repair if they do break down.
The Laser would certainly be a better driver’s car and would probably have the performance edge on the two. Do a quick run doun on the things that you would most likely have to fix in the next three years and compare the associated costs involved.

I wouldn’t worry about resale, as cars are worth bugger all these days, although, the Toyota would possibly come out ahead here as they appeal to a lot of females as a good first car.

Personally I’d stick with the Toyota for what you plan to use it for.

some good points full noise.

i am personally leanign towards the laser BECAUSE i have a fare few spares for it coz i own one meself also. And I can work on it myself.

Where as the corolla i dont know and dont although they do look fairly straight forward.


But like you say i reckon the corolla would have better resale although if i could sell the laser i could prolly get more for that if i find the right ppl.


I bought the laser to wreck it but the missus took a liking to it lol.

The Laser is a drivers car for the TX3, personally if your missus enjoys it keep that and they are a sought after car. The corolla if she simply just gets from a to b and really doesn't mind how she gets there. but hey maybe ask her

The TX3 Turbo is gonna have much better resale value as turbo's and performance cars always hold their value much better. Have a look how much a 1993 corolla is worth, and then a 1990 model equivalent to the TX3 turbo. You'll see that in 3 years you wont be able to flog off your corolla but their will still be p platers wanting to buy your turbo.

I had a kh2 tx3 turbo for my first car, never had a problem with it, keep the laser amazer!.... just dont call me when/if you need a clutch done

haha all good it has a buggered transfer atm so that will need fixing but i am leaning towards keeping it. Like has been said the corolla will be great chicks car but the laser will attract the young person wanting a turbo car.


ahh i will have to wait and see. gunna talk to missus tonight and make her decide. she can drive mine to see what it is like and we will go from there.

Keep the Corolla!!

Both have done high mileage but the Corolla is much simpler mechanically than the TX3 and they are generally fairly reliable and relatively cheap to repair.

Laser TX3: High Mileage + Turbo charger + AWD + Rare = "Big $$$ for repair costs"

Corolla: High Mileage + simple mechanics + one on every corner = "Cheap to repair"

Nothing to consider really.

yeah true. we just sat down n worked out all money side of it.

is gunna cost approx 4500 to ge laser on the road including buying it. So we would need to sell the Corolla for atleast 5500 to make it worth while. As i will make a far bit off wrckong the laser atm. As you said parts rare = lotsa $$$$ lol.

So looks like we will wreck it or try sell it as a project and spend a bit on the corolla.

Will see how i go. Need to act pretty quick to sell it in bits or whole as need the money back soon.

Will be hard takin another TX3 off the road but these things happen.

Some would call me a killer neways for wreckign a ED XR6 but it wasnt worth repairing so.....
