Default what constitutes a write off?

I let my old lady drive my car last night and this is what she came home with, ran into a big square concrete drain box as she moved over to let a car through a narrow driveway, since i have no idea at all about this i was wondering if anyone could give us a heads up on what to expect?

i think its when the repair cost is more than a certain % of the payout figure. sometimes cars get written off for seemingly minor damage, other times they are insured to the hilt and so get repaired, sometimes with quite extensive damage.

hard to say from the pic but i would think that will be a repair.

yeah... there are 2 main types of write offs...

firstly .. when the damage to the car has compromised the structural integrity of the car..

secondly.. if the cost to repair the car is more than what the car is worth...

but they have to justify the wirite off not as a money % thing but as a bloody good reason. I had my ute getting reapirs years ago and the unsured value was 15g. The repairs were 13g. Swann insurance were being investgated as were alot of insurers because they were writing everything off.

Now with alot of major diasters in the last 6 months, they are unable to write anything off because of a they won't get much at auction atm and also there repairers need there qouta for the month too.

That looks like it's just a sill panel and a door - shouldn't be too much, unless the chassis rail is creased/bent as well.

sounds like its nothing too big then, it looks a lot worse in person, basically part of that sill panel is flat, both doors are bitten pretty hard, front worse than rear, door doesn't close properly.

managed to get a better pic and went to the $&% of a thing today and took a picture.

You're points are correct, but there is another type of write off. I used to work in the insurance industry, and like most businesses, it's all about minimising costs. Probably the most common type of write off is when the value of the wreck exceeds the value of the repairs. Once a car is written off, ownership of the wreck is transferred to the insurance company, essentially by paying you out, they have just bought your car.

For example, you may have a car worth $10,000.00 and have accident damage worth $1,000.00. You would probably assume that the insurer will repair the car and in most cases this would be correct, but the missing piece of the puzzle is the value of the wreck.

Lets say the value of the wreck is $6,000.00, the insurance company will fix your car and it just cost them $1,000.00. But if the value of the wreck was $9,500.00, your car just became a write off. The insurance company pays you $10,000.00, sells the wreck for $9,500.00 and it's only cost them $500.00.

AAARRGGGHHHH

You have to be joking, LOL, i can't belive it.

Bloody TELSTRA and the Manhole !!!! THIS SHOULD not be at this height, these are ground level and should not be this high so close to the road.

What if you tripped over it and broke your leg !!!!!!!

Mate I'd be calling them and showing them some Pics and what to know the depth of cover and alingment of SAID MANHOLE.

I'd also speak with council and get there opion, get a ranger to meet you on-site or have a council restoration eng to come out.

Any car cutting the cnr can hit this and tip.

Magoo you are very close but not entirely right.

The comparison is repair cost Vs (Market value less salvage)

For example.

MV is $10,000
Salvage is $1500
Repair cost is $7000
Then the vehicle(as long as the integrity has not been compromised) will be repaired.
However if the repairs were $9000, then the car is un-economic to repair.

Naturally this works with heavy hit vehicle and not minor hits where that salvage is closer to the MV.

I said this because I'm in the telco industry where we haul cable through these everyday & we even build these weekly for Telstra all over NSW.

We have acess to the building specs and regs I'll dig out the wording or post as a snap shot for you.

You whould never build one so close to the road to endanager workers in the manhole for thier safety.

If you can't build it deep enough because of other utilitys such as gas mains,EL or water then you make deep enough to footpath/nature strip depth.

They should be no reason this extra 100/200mm of suround should have been built, each utilty has it's own alingment and depth of cover to advoid running into each other.

The driver of the vehicle is 100% liable. Telstra do not have to pay a cent.

Go and take photos of the manhole showing location (street signs) as well as the damage to your car and get a quote for repairs. Call them and ask to talk to someone who looks after compensation claims and if they cannot help you ask to talk to their supervisor.Also have the date and time of the incident.
Telstra have a Duty Of Care with their network. Why did they have the turrett sitting so far out of the ground as it should be level with the surrounding area and why was it located so close to the kerb.
People have got compensation from Telstra for falling over their pits and into manholes due to their position on the footpath (too high or in poor condition)That's why Telstra have staff going around replacing pits and covers to reduce compensation claims (look at all the yellow frames around the place where their pits are damaged ) and councils now repair footpaths (grind them down or biuld them up) for the same reasons.
I think you have a good case for compensation from them. Just keep a copy of whatever you send them and the names of the people you speak to about this.
Just be prepared to give them something in writing (statement from your wife and anyone who saw it happen)
