Topic says it all. I'm keen to purchase a small camera to mount on the windscreen or near to capture my driving on the day. Ive looked at a few whihc seem to be priced around 500 bux. Just wondering if anyone has used one before.
Was the quality any good? How much footage can they capture? |

I use one on my motorbike. Can take over an hrs video on a 4GB card, just make sure the battery is fully charged. Go for a proper video camera not a digital camera with video function as the sound, and picture quality wont be any where near as good.

check out ebay for eaglecam their a small bullet shaped camera, with a range of mounting options included, including a window suction mount. the camera can rotate 360deg around the mounting bracket. i use one when flying, their great. useless at night, and only film about 640x480 pixles. not too bad for youtube

This was with a Canon FS100 ... gives you an idea of the quality you can expect from a $500 jobbie.

I use a Gopro Hero motorsports cam.
Loads to 2gb sd card, and uses 2 AAA batteries. Pretty good picture quality but not like a video camera. Notice they a HD cam now. http://www.goprocamera.com/

I have the Hero camera as well, sound quality is very poor, but you do get what you pay for. And they are tiny, even in their waterproof housing. It was under 300 bucks

Go Pro are the way to go - $250 good quality, good sound and very light and easy to use. Limited only by your memory card.
Many normal video cameras have a safety/shockproof function which means the camera will turn off with hard bumps. even when you switch this function off so it stays recording, it will still turn off with a hard bump to avoid hard drive damage. Great selling tool for a video camera, just not for motorsport. Plus you need to mount it PROPERLY. we are very strict on video cameras thru scrutineering. The little light ones are no trouble.(eg gopro)

I had a Monaro a few years back and went to a Porsche track day at Calder.
A mate from work suggested (and I had made) the following: Get an old headrest for the car model Get rid of the leather (or vinyl, or material) Weld a flat plate on the top Drill a hole Put the movie camera on top and get a tripod screw through the drilled hole Tilt the seat to get the best view. It worked beautifully for 80 laps. Used it around town for a while too. Didn't shake at all. If anyone wants a 2002 Monaro headrest camera holder give me a yell. I don't need it anymore. If you want a photo , yell out and I'll post. |
