This as happen twice with my car both times when I have the aircon on.
The first time I was in traffic with the aircon on and I noticed the temperature starting to climb.I pulled over turn the aircon off and the temperature went back to normal. Today as it was raining I turned the aircon on in traffic to defog the windows the temperature started to climb as well as soon as I turned the aircon off it went back to normal. Any ideas will be much appreciated on what the problem might be and the solution. Thanks |

When it's starting to overheat, get out and check if both thermo fans are running or not.

Thanks I will have a look if one or both of the fans aren't working what could be wrong and is it expensive to fix.

Had a similar problem. turned out someone before I owned my car had disconnected the thermos buy just yanking on the wires and snapped them, so it was an easy fix
|

Overheating - is the failsafe system intervening or is it just via the gauge you think its overheating? If it's genuinely overheating (ie to critical levels) the computer will start cutting power to your engine.

Yes that's what happened both times no power to the engine due to the temperature

Usually though the failsafe kicks in when the needle actually hits the red (and that's about the 135 deg C mark too.
I'd be checking the relays for the thermos for sure. I'd also be checking the remainder of your cooling system out as well ... just to be on the safe side.
