Just recently come into ownership of a 2001 au Xr6...and must say i am in heaven.
Its only done 69,000 and is in smick condition. But over the last few days ive noticed a ever so slight grinding feeling when turning sharply,or navigating a rounderbout. Is this just a sign that the brakes are about to be a issue,or is it a sign of somthing worse?? Sorry if its a bit of a newbie question...but hey...i'm a newbie!!  : ...MERCUTIO. |

The steering will sometimes give a bit of a shudder thru the wheel, but grinding?
Sound or feel? Thru the brake pedal or thru the wheel, if its a feel?

power steering fluid? mine sounded bad till i figured out it needs oil...

your pads will be gone.
this happens to my mums car when the pads get worn out. when the car turns, or has teh wheels turned a lot, there is a grinding sound. indicating the pads are gone. use to do it on my old ED too.

Yeh i figured it might be the pads,just wanted to check before i had it done.
Grinding might be a bit to over the top word,just a slight shuddering...and its the kind of feeling more than a sound...so far! Guess i will get it down to the brake centre soon....thou i am gonna upgrade from 16 factory rims to a set of sexy as fook 19's in a week or two...probably the best time to get them done i spose. Thanks for the advice guys and gals...your sure to hear a lot more from me,as this is my first foray into the world of Fords(always been a holden man..sorry)...but so far its a very pleasurable trip to the "dark side of the force"(as my friends put it!!) |

I get a grinding graunching sound at slow speed when turning ... it's usually a case of low power steer fluid ... or it's a steering rack problem (especially if you have been driving with an empty power steering reservoir).
I'd be getting this checked out first before your brakes.

It could be one of 3 things
The beginnings of a dry wheel assembly hub (read wheel bearing) The lower ball joint, when they wear the geometry of the upright changes and throws the floating brake rotor out of true and it will rub (when turning) Perhaps uneven wear on one of the front pads but imho the less likely of the three. The symptons sure sound like one of the top two as you can 'feel' the grinding when turning not so much hear it.
