Should be different seeing him here instead of Sheeds. He played very hard footy and no doubt his coaching would be similar.

Me still thinks Geelong's Bomber has the Essendon job! And was virtually signed to it as early as May this year. We'll see come Monday?

i saw the report, then went to find some sources or something and there was nothing. bigfooty.com are talking about it being a leak, so maybe it might be announced in the next few days.

Thought I heard on Nova news that he has been appointed coach.

I think its a good move.

EDIT - Peter Jackson has said Neale Daniher will not be offered the coaching position.

On SEN this morning, it confirmed that Hardwick has NOT got the job yet.
Matthew Knights is still in the running, but it is almost certain that Hardwick will still get the position.

Essendon really made a meal of the coaching race.

They'll make the decision next week. They'll have to see what happens with Thompson first, you'd imagine.

Knighter wouldn't be much show, I dont think. He's struggled with Bendigo as much as I love him.

The first time Neil Daniher heard that he was out of the race was on radio...

Essendon are not going about this very well....then again they haven't had to do this for many many years.

They want Bomber.......but he hasn't decided what he wants to do yet.

I dare say his price (if not already) will go up with a GF win.

Go Cats

I think there's only a chance Mark Thompson will go to Essendon if Geelong do win. Otherwise, I do recall him saying that whilst the Cats were in contention for a flag he would not jump ship..

From Essendonfc.com.au

Coaching appointment process continues
Wednesday, 26 September 2007
Statement from Essendon Managing Director, Peter Jackson:

Contrary to some media reports, the Essendon Football Club has not made a decision on the appointment of a new coach for 2008.

The process that we originally implemented continues.

We are not discussing publicly the names of people, or time-lines, involved in this process and an announcement on the coaching appointment will be made in due course.

I am extremely disappointed that some private information regarding the coaching appointment has been provided to the media.

Again, I would like to thank those people who applied and stress that the quality of all candidates has been excellent.

September 27, 2007 FORMER Richmond captain Matthew Knights has been appointed as the new coach of Essendon.

Essendon managing director Peter Jackson said Knights had been appointed for three seasons, after an extensive interview process.

"I congratulate Matthew on his appointment and the board is very comfortable he has the necessary skills to get this club back playing finals football," Jackson said on the club's website.

"We had some excellent candidates for the position and each of those that made it to the final stages would have brought something to this football club.

"However Matthew became more and more impressive as the interview process went on and we are very excited about the club's future with him as coach."

Knights has coached the Bombers' VFL affiliate Bendigo for the past three seasons.

This season, he was also Essendon's development coach.

The 36-year-old played 279 games with Richmond from 1988 to 2002, including captaining the club from 1997 to 2000.

He was twice the Tigers' best and fairest, in 1990 and 1992.

Knights coached the Port Adelaide Magpies in the SANFL in 2003, before joining the Bombers.

Knights replaces Kevin Sheedy, who coached Essendon for 27 years and won four premierships, with the club having announced after round 16 this year he would not continue in the job next season.

Knights said he had considered himself an outsider for the job, but was confident he would succeed.
"The thoroughness and diligence of the process gives me enormous confidence going into this role that I'm the best man for the job, no doubt about that," Knights said.

"I feel ready, I feel strong and I feel ready to go."

Knights said Sheedy had been instrumental in helping him get the job.

"I'm going to be very different to Kevin," Knights said.

"Kevin has given me enormous autonomy at Bendigo, to coach Bendigo to the best of my ability and develop the youth at the Essendon footy club.

"Kevin's support has certainly played a huge part in fast-tracking my development.

"Everyone is going to have a lesser profile than the great Kevin Sheedy and that's a given, but I'm going to be my own person."

Knights beat out candidates including West Coast assistant Peter Sumich, former Melbourne coach Neale Daniher and Hawthorn assistant Damien Hardwick.

Jackson also confirmed the Bombers ruled out Geelong coach Mark Thompson, who will lead the Cats into a grand final on Saturday, as the club could not delay the appointment of its new coach any longer.

I wouldn't blame Essendon as a whole for this mess, Peter Jackson is where I lay the blame.

No coach can be judged on their record.

Damian Drum was the coach at Sydney when Ron Barassi was there. He was a good coach...he just had a team that was semi-professional and downright crepe.

You can be a very good coach and hardly win a game.

Denis Pagan is a champion coach, but at Carlton he failed.
David Parkin was an excellent coach at Hawthorn and Carlton (two stints), but in 1988 at Fitzroy, he fell in a heap.

If Knights is poo, he'll move on. Simple as that. Geelong had a bad coach in Ayres and he stunk the corridors for 5 years.

Give him a go!
