out of those listed: jack brabham, no doubt.

one that i think should be on that list:
Rachelle Splatt.

1st woman to win a pro drag title in australia, but even more so, because she was the 1st woman in the world over 300mph, also making her the 1st non-american to do so and the 1st australian to boot.

and how about jim read??
won many titles, and was the main force in getting WSID off the ground.

my 2c anyway.

Unfortunately, I believe Tony Cochrane is also one of the most influential people as he is responsible for the the meteoric rise of the circus they call 'V8 Supercars', love it or hate it, love him or hate him, V8 Supercars are huge here and overseas, the yanks love 'em.

Again, some love Alan Moffat, some hate him, but one thing he is responsible for is many of the safety features that are incoporated in todays' race cars, he really stood on his digs in the early days pushing CAMS to get more conscious about safety issues, you can actually see him comment about it in one of the the Fords at Bathurst videos.

In order of the poll, but Brock is definitely number 1

Peter Brock

Craig Lowndes
Casey Stoner
Mick Doohan
Possum Bourne
Chris Atkinson
Jim Richards
Mark Skaife

Didn't make the 10 though as I'm only a young bloke so didn't really know all of them.

Bob Jane.

Definatly influential, But not in a good way!

Solely responsible for the demise of drag racing in Adelaide.

Thanks guys - this is turning into a great little discussion with lots of viewpoints... I couldnt have more than 30 choices im sorry, so i tried to stick with the more noticable names.... and kept them as drivers/riders.... and a spread over the generations/different catagories as there are numerous age groups with different tastes.
Thanks for the GARRIE mistake.
Interesting really to see Lowndes creeping in there - would that be because he's with Ford ?? NAh - not here surely

As it stands ATM
1. Brock
2. Johnson
3. Moffat
4. Doohan
5. Brabham
6. Lowndes
7. Ambrose
8. Jane
9. Richards
10. Skaife

Surprised that there is not a lot of the older generation there

The thread title reads 'influential australians' which eludes to people who have made huge impacts on their given sport.

Having said that my top 10 are
Jack Brabham- winning F1.
Harry Firth- for defecting from Ford to head the successful Holden dealer team.
Peter Brock- for taking on the might of the Ford factory backed race teams.
Dick Johnson- for proving a privateer can match it with the big boys.
Fred Gibson- for single handedly bringing about the end of GRP A in aust. with the GTR's.
Mark Skaife- for his professional approach to driving.
Jim Richards- for his success in many forms of tin top racing.
Mick Doohan- although not the first to hold the 500cc title he won more than any other Australian.
Craig Lowndes- For his guts in defecting from Holden to help lift Ford to the top again.
Marcus Ambrose- For breaking Holdens strangle hold on the championship.

And an unhonourable mention to the guy who wrote the 'Supercar scare' article.
