Default Automotive Apprenticeship

Hey all.

I've just completed year 10 and now Im looking for a light vehicle automotive apprenticeship commencing ASAP, i was wondering if anyone here knows of anyone wanted an apprentice or someone who would simply take on an apprentice.

I have applied for the CertII automotive course at TAFE commencing in january 2008 as a backup.

I live in Pearcedale, which is in the south eastern suburbs of melbourne VIC.

The areas i can get to the easiest are
Cranbourne
Somerville
Langwarrin
Karingal
Frankston
Hampton Park

Sorry if there is anything i've left out.

If you want to know anything just ask.

Thank you for your help in advance

I've completed the Cert II you're referring to. And VACC told me its irrelevant to the job, but I think they were just testing me. I start my apprenticeship next year.

Just knock on workshops doors. But, I reccomened you complete your VCE. I was reluctant to, but its worth it in the end.

It makes you more employable. Because you know more.

Im not going back to school. I want to become a mechanic and i dont see the point in doing VCE. because it will waste my learning time

There's no point in doing the Cert II next year then because you'll be doing the Cert III once you commence your apprenticeship.

Look mate, if you want an apprenticeship, you can't have the mentality of "I might go in sometime this week". Be there 9am sharp Monday morning (providing they start a bit before that).

I'm in a different trade, but similar, and as an employer, I'm not interested in looking at pre-voc certificates. For someone your age, a part time job would look better on your resume. You also need to present yourself as a young lad who's left his school days behind, and is prepared to move into the mans world, and work like a man.

At 16 two more years of school wouldn't be wasted learning. If you don't have your own transport getting a job is going to be difficult as that is one thing they will ask you before you start.

I hated school and stayed the last two years I didn't make much use of them but it was worth it as every employer through your life is going to want to know your school education and for the sake of two more years you might as well just ride it out till you can get a license and drive. I know this is the last thing you want to hear as leaving school 2 years early is so much more fun.

Some schools offer for you to go to school 2-3 days a week and the other days go work on your apprenticeship then you have the best of both worlds a completed education and a job.

Just some thing to think about as been a mechanic isnt the highest paid job and your most likely going to want to change careers in your life as well

In regards to finding an apprenticeship check out the yellow pages there are a alot of places that try to get you into jobs. I would just recommend staying away from dealerships unless you like sweeping floors and changing oil filters for the next few years!

That's exactly the same mentality i have, but a few years down the track, when your making less money than everyone else and working more hours you'll see what alot of the older people are on about. Even now im thinking about going back into metal fabrication, it will be good for the first few years, but down the track it wont be so glamorus

Yeah, but if everyone thought like that there will be no mechanics in 10 years.

I'll have to experiene it for myself, Then i can either look back and say, yeah they were right, or Im still enjoying this, Im lucky i stuck my head down and did what i want to do.

Or, you could do the same in the army. Pay isint as good, but you get benefits galore, no tax and plenty of other things. And you can see the world while your at it. That's my plan for next year (shame you have to be 17 to join :()

LOL, thats the attitude in this day and age.

EDIT: When you say "earning less money than everyone else"... Do you mean your work colleagues? Or friends and family?

As in, all of them. Most of my friends are in trade jobs, except for the few who are are still in school or gone to tafe/uni to do things like accounting/law/medical etc etc.

You could give a heavy diesel apprenticeship a go, the pay is better and it's still working on engines etc. Most jobs out there people get sick of in the end anyway.
