Default worst few days as a parent

gday all

i know this is not ozecruisers related as in car but as a family i think it is in a way ( that is what we are working for as a club )

this goes back to tuesday

it started out as a normal day we sent our 6 yr old daughter to school all good

the day goes well till 2.45 pm when helen ( munchkin ) got a phone call saying that sarah had a fall and should be picked up

this is where it become a s#it fight from what the school told us she had the fall at 1.20 pm not a happy camper on that one

the school did nothing to help her bar a cold pack

when i got home from work we decided to take her to emergency at geelong hospital what a mistake

we sat there for 4 hours before we got seen and then another 2 hous to get the x-ray done

that is where the fun started ( all night effort )

once we finally found out she had broken her arm it took another 2 hours for her to get admitted being that the bone specialist had said it will need to be operated on it was 2 am when she finally got to the ward .....

sat there till 3 am needed to get home for a shower ect and headed back at 5 am out again at 7.20 to get our other little guy to kinder

returned at 9.30 to just sit there and wait

from there it got to 12. pm and they began to prep for the opp

got to 1pm and it was looking like it was going to happen then the bone specialist come in to say they don't want to operate and want to see if it heal normally over the next 3 weeks if it has not done so she will have to do the opp then

just thought i would share this with you all

jason

Seems an odd amount of time for the school to wait to contact you, surely she would have been in some pain? You'd think that would be enough to give the parents at least a courtesy call.

Thats where a small school is great Rob. We get calls for even minor things .......

Unfortunately there is that thing about a 'boy who cried wolf' ....... most of the old office ladies are that weather worn that they leave things for a while to make sure its not a way out of class ...... even when they are only babies ..... wrong but a fact of life.

The sick bay ladies at my primary school were great, they were all sisters (nuns.. whatever), and they'd spoil you when you went into sickbay

Bring back the nuns I say!

That's terrible.

I would also get opinions form multiple specialists.

I'm talking from experience. Broke my finger should've just splinted it the old fashion way.
But all these awesome doctors with their new technology somehow left me with a bung finger (loose joint and it sits 20 degrees out, this was due to a dodgy brace the "Hand specialist" made for me).

I'd be cautious and careful with any medical decision you make regarding this. It's obvious you have to make a medical decision, just make sure it's the right one.

An operation could be necessary to make sure her arm has optimal recovery.
As hard and as time consuming as it may be, opinions from more doctors would be a good idea.

In the end though you always take a little bit of a gamble when it comes to Doctors.

To put your mind at ease, a broken arm is the most common thing a bone specialist will come across.

welcome to the hospital system.

it's one of those things where you just dont get a grasp of how f4rked up it is until you need to use it.

My girlfriend had a fall december 16, went to the hospital, they did xrays really quick, waited 5hrs for them to be read.

once done she was told she had a sprained ankle. went home fine.

month later it was still swollen etc, so she went back. turns out the bone and all the ligiments were broken.

now i'm no doctor, but honestly how do you f4rk that kind of thing up???

to make matters worse, she had her 2 required surgeries, HOWEVER, on the 2nd one, the doctor "somehow" managed to slice an existing scar which was about 4cm away from the insision point, which of course then got infected. Once she called up and stated the symptoms he rushed her into the OR and cut it out as the hospital was having a contamination issue.

its one thing im getting really annoyed about is the lack of doctors, and then the fact that most of the doctors here lack any quality what so ever...

feels good to have a rant on a friday morning

I also hope your young one is feeling better

It could be worse, the hospital could have questioned how the injury occured.

My 5yr old daughter had a very minor greenstick fracture to her wrist from a fall while with me (unknown by me at time & did not require plaster)

Discovered by my ex the next day - (an ex child protection investigator and currently working at the local hospital paediatric dept)

Reported by the local hospital paediatric dept to police, and plaster was applied to the injury for greater impact in the videoed statement.

My current partner was alleged to have inflicted the injury through physical discipline eight days prior to initial treatment & X-Rays.

I did not see my daughter for over two months.

After four months and a Police investigation, a FACS investigation, criminal assault charges, a DV application, a two day hearing and $10K legal costs, it was deemed no case to answer and could be perceived as a complete waste of court and police resources.

The quote from a Police officer during the ordeal - "a child's arm is broken and somebody has to pay the price for it"

Guess who was left to pay the bill?

Jason,

You always have to wait at Emergency at Hosi, my last vist we waited 5 hours to get into Emergency and then 2 hours in emergency before the doctor came and saw my mate :evil3:

Damn Jase, that's not good to hear. I hope Sarah is back to herself real soon. The school did the same to us when Jake broke his wrist.

You expect better from the system? Send your kids to a different private school then.

My time is money too.

In that regard... no... i have not WORKED at a school... BUT... i have been that child...

When i was in primary school... i took a heavy fall backwards, head first into the concrete path... i had blood everywhere and i still had to wait ages for my mother to come... turned out they had to check what their policy was to help a child with such an injury... i had to hold the back of my head to slow the bleeding, as they refused to come that close to me... ALOT of disgusted parents witnessed it...

Sorry Grimus... i had to make the point shown...

yeh i know what you are saying my nephew is like that and i'm one of the contacts for the school for him

as for my daughter we got told that she is a brainiac and is so far infront of the rest that she could have a week off school without getting behind

that makes me very happy and as nostalga ea said a call would have been good

Well to be honest I don't blame them. Teachers aren't paramedics, they aren't going to risk diseases and stuff (Basically, their life) or risk yours to stop blood coming out. I'm guessing you didn't die from the ordeal? If they made things worse by jumping in and doing the wrong thing, I'm sure your parents as well as the parents who witnessed you fall over (yet didn't do anything I assume?) would all have just said 'oh well, they jumped in early, thats all I'm worried about'?

I'm not trying to start arguements either, however people need to think about what they're talking about and realise teachers are still workers, and so they need to be aware of OHS&W, which IMO is becoming overkill in all departments, not just schools. You can't just whinge about schools, when almost every day on the news there are stories of teachers leaving, not being happy with their wages/conditions/training etc. But I guess everyone who hasn't been happy with the heavily subsidised school they send their children to have just complained to friends/a car based internet forum instead of writing a letter to the Government, even if it is your local MP?

Also, isn't evading the swear filter a breach of T&C? I'm disgusted at this type of language used on this supposedly family based forum.
