Hehe, as long as you have the money and space, you can have as many as you want!

that was quite a few years ago now so maybe its changed. call the rta and ask them.

I see no reason why there should be a limit. If someone has the money to buy cars and register them, why not let them. Its a free country.

In WA I think its about 8. After that you have to have a dealers license.

In QLD you can only sell 4 registered cars in a year but I know of no limit on registered cars at one time

You can own as many cars as you want. There is no law on how many vehicles you can own anywhere in Australia.

But if you intend on selling those vehicle, each state has a different set of laws. If you exceed the maximum number of sales per year you must apply for and obtain a second hand car dealers license.

If you buy & sell a few, get some done in Mum/Dad/Wife/Sister/Brothers name. As mentioned, the limit is what you can sell, not what you can buy.

there is no problem with you owning 50 cars if you want but if you sell 2 cars a week, chances are you are making money and should have a dealer's license.

i was hauled over the coals by Fair trading in Queensland and fined $300 for selling a car without a dealers liscence ($10,000 is max fine)as i was warned ive sold to many cars ,he even went on to say they can Deem me as earning $3000 average per car and the Tax dept and Social security would get copies of all paperwork ,even though some cars i lost on some i broke even or swapped and the most profit i ever made was$2000 after painting an old Holden, He never believed me when i told him it was my hobby and made bugger all money,
and he told me i could not sell any more cars full stop without risking haveing there dept visit me again,
Needless to say i dont sell them registered any more unless ive been driving them for a year or so.
i asked him why they had hassled me and he informed me they went and took phone numbers off cars advertised on the side of the road and in local papers and crosschecked over a year or so and went and checked on people who sold more than normal

Back in the early 80's my brother sold 12 cars in one year & was told if he wanted to sell any more he'd need to get a second hand dealer license, this was in Victoria.

There would have to be some exceptions, what if Lindsay Fox decided to cull 20 cars from his collection, would he have to get a dealers licence?

In Vic, you can only sell 6 in any 12 period. In terms of buying, unlimited. Once sold 6, you need to be an LMCT...

I don't think Lindsay Fox would actually own them - they'd be in a trust or company name, no doubt. And even if he did, the sort of cars he would be selling would be handled by an agent who would undoubtedly have a license.

In the ACT, you are allowed to sell 3 registered cars a year, and then you need a dealers license, or just wait until the following year (or sell unregistered).

Was talking this over with a mate of mine a few months back. In NSW it stands at maximum of 6 cars/year without a licence.

Apparently here in SA you can't have more than 7 cars registered in one persons name, not sure about selling them.

In SA would you have anyone that could afford 7 (decent) cars? :

Makes sense though - there are only 7 days in a week. When you sell them, you could advertise each as "Only driven to <insert location, eg work> on <insert weekday, eg Wednesday>", and you could essentially be totally honest.

ouch more SA bashing I see haha. But I do see your point and that would work like you said. I owned six cars in 2007 and none where worth more than a few hundred dollars. So your right about SA really haha

Bite thy tongue. Got 7 myself that aren't bombs. Got a few more wrecks in the back yard but. I won't mention the brand of car that I have the most wrecks of. : Can't say I've ever heard you can't have more than a particular amount of cars regoed in your name at one time but.

There may not be a limit to how many vehicles you can own, and lets say there is, they can't stop you from owning unregistered vehicles as there is no record of who owns what.

I see the larger problem here is that you need to have somewhere to park these cars. If you live in the burbs parking 7 cars may mean some are parked on the street, this will get the plod on your case asking you to park them somewhere else. Also I am pretty sure that others that share your street can get cranky at old broken cars parked on your front lawn, as this can devalue their property.

If you have somewhere to put them all, a farm say as far as I can see there is no limit on how many you can own. There are limits on how many you can sell in a period tho.
