Thumbs up Brisbane Lions Brilliant Win !!!

After watching the BL beat Carlton by 7 points. How can anyone say that NRL is better than AFL ? That game had it all, courage, fierce tackling, skills etc.
There was an article in the Courier Mail this week about NRL needs to re-invent itself as its becoming irrelevant.
Go the Lions and thump Bulldogs on friday. !!!

Was just glad the Cats won...was confident we could..but it was 50/50.

Still, I still think it's Collingwood and St Kilda for the GF.

Good to see the non Victorian teams win. Hopefully Saints can win today and then Adelaide can take out Collingwood next week.

s.black deserves to be mentioned in the same category as the best in the business. i think even moreso due to the fact he's been doing it for a lot longer and seems to just get better.
how good was sherman. couple of his runs were superb. bradshaw - what can you say. brown tends to take most of the limelight but this guy is far from small and virtually won the game off his own boot.

awesome game. not many expected brisbane to make the 8 this year and even less the 2nd round of finals. brisbane know they aren't premiers this year but are just giving it their all and anything can happen on the day. not many teams have the heart to come from 30 down in the last 1/4.

Thumbs up

Prydey..football is a strange game. teams have won the Premiership from 8th place, in the past. It is a very unlikely occurrence. Wouldn't it be great for Vossy to be the first, first year coach to win a Premiership ? It might happen !!!
Give those one-eyed Queenslanders a wakeup that NRL isn't the only football game in QLD !!!!!!
Go Lions !!!

Not in the AFL...

Also, Alan Joyce coached Hawthorn to the premiership in 1988...his first year at Hawthorn and as a coach (Allan Jeans was out for the year due to illness). When Jeans retired as coach at the end of 1990, Joyce took over again and got another flag...2 flags in two years of coaching.

I am sure there have been other coaches who have coached premierships in their first year...they just go back a long, long way...
Jesaulenko was captain coach of the 1979 premiership (his first FULL year in the role - he took over about round 6 1978 after Ian Steward had a coronary spasm).

But I do like Voss, and I like Brisbane (though I'm a nervous Cat). I thought it would have been tough on either side if they lost in that game, because I like Judd.

The lions have a good chance of getting up over the bulldogs next week but I think thats as far as they can go. I reckon the bulldogs are a little overrated.

Missed the lions game as we were camping over the weekend, but we did listen to the game on the radio (best we could do) radio never does a good game justice but it still got exciting. I really dont think they have a chance against the doggies though. However its a fantastic effort to get this far.
Im a saints fan through and through and im just stoked they got back to some better form when it counted yesterday. The pies played far from their best, but hopefully that had a lot to do with the saints pressure. Gonna be a few very nervous weeks coming up.

No team has won from 8th place. Adelaide has been the closest coming 3rd.

Current finals system only dates back to 2004. We know they can beat the Doggies and if anyone can choke St Kilda/Collingwood can. A savy man would have placed his bets weeks ago.

yep, adelaide won their 2 flags from 6th or 7th but the finals system was different then too. some would argue it was harder as 1 played 8, 2 played 7 etc etc.

afl finals is a very unique setup and i'm not really a fan. their should be a lot more made of the minor premiership the way the finals are. nba has a best of 7 between top 2 teams. soccer (football) - whoever finishes the season top are premiers. etc afl can have a team not lose a game all year, a team lose 10 games and scrape into the finals with 12 wins and then have a stella month and win the flag. history then shows that team to be premiers, which implies the best team for that year. its the only sport where the premiers aren't necessarily the best team of the year.

I had a boundary seat and yelled myself hoarse. It was a great game with a very large Carlton contingent making a lot of noise.

Chris Judd had a good night too:

prydey..so we could do like the round ball game. which ever team wins the minor premiership,,wins the Premiership ? no play offs ? We could then as they do in the roundball game, demote teams 7 and 8 and promote teams 9 and 10 ?ie have Teams 1 to 8 as the Premier League teams .Teams 9 to 16 as League 2 ?
Wouldn't that stir up some controversy/debate !!!

Yes, but it wasn't 8th position...you're arguing something completely different...

No they didn't.

Adelaide finished 4th in 1997 and had a home final against West Coast in week one, and won.
Week two defeated Geelong in Adelaide.
Week three defeated the Dogs.

In 1998, Adelaide finished 5th, thrashed week 1 by Melbourne, won the rest against Sydney, Bulldogs then North Melbourne...

I thought it was 2000...

Geelong finished 5th, Hawthorn finished 8th, and Hawks beat us.
Essendon 1st, Carlton 2nd, Melbourne 3rd and North 4th.
Essendon beat North by 125, while Melbourne beat Carlton by a narrow margin.

1999 was the last year of the McIntyre 8, due to Carlton being thrashed week 1 despite finishing 6th, and still making the Grand Final.

Fitzroy came 4th in 1916 (which was also the wooden spoon that year - was a top four back then) and won the flag.
Adelaide won from 4th and 5th in 97 and 98.
West Coast won from 4th in 1992.

BUT the current finals system is the best we've had since the top 5, which finished after the 1990 season.

i'm not saying their system is good, or even better. i'm just pointing out that with the current afl system, the premiers aren't necessarily the best team that year.

uranium - i enjoy the game as a sport. i don't actually follow any particular team. i thought adel. came from lower down to win but obviously i was wrong.
