Talking Top Gear Goes HD

http://transmission.blogs.topgear.co...gear-to-go-hd/

Quote:
We’ve just heard it confirmed by BBC brass that the next series of Top Gear will be in HD.

That means all the races, supercars sliding from left to right of your telly screens and the boys’ comedic adventure, all in crystal clarity.

As Jeremy said a few weeks’ back, filming is well underway on Series 14 and if all goes to plan it’ll be on your screens by mid-November.

Until then, it’s the usual grainy repeats on Dave – or the bulging archive of on-demand clips we’ve got here at TopGear.com. You should know where they are by now…

I can't wait for this, should be good seeing them finally going hd.

Thanks

Has anything ever been recorded by the Top Gear boys about their opinion
of gritty Aussie Fords, i.e, B series Falcons? (Maybe they've never heard of them?)

Not necessarily. For example, when Simpsons went HD, the size of the files remained at 175Mb

175kb, that must be a real short episode. :

No comparison though. Cartoons use a lot of solid, constant colours which compress really well.

I'd be expecting at least double the size of the current download.

Oops. Fixed

How about that my movie collection is roughly 700Mb each when they're similar in length, yet some are SD, some HD.

If the size of the file is small then the resolution is degraded.

I wonder how Top Gear has been sold on Bluray at 1080P if it has never been recorded in HD? Maybe it has just never been broadcast in HD before.

True Blood HD is 590-700mb per episode, 1 hour.If you haven't seen this, as Molly would say "do yourself a favour " sex, violence ,Vampires being bad Vampires, Has Steve Kawanten in it, ex=Home and Away.. usual HBO excellence.

SBS says it's 720p when watching on SBS HD.

Forget about it being broadcast in 1080p though, it won't happen for the foreseeable future. Most it will ever be is 1080i at the moment.

Only the Polar special was recorded in HD, as far as I know this is the only one to be released so far on Blu Ray

The rest are recorded and broadcast in 576p (Despite what SBSHD says, likely upscaled to 720p)

just some useless helpful information

HD is and will only ever be classified in 4 different resolutions

720i
720p
1080i (aka FULL HD)
1080p (aka FULL HD)

SD or easier terms this is what your DVD player outputs without upscaling is

576i
576p

in reference to the file sizes, its gets even more confusing when you factor in the bitrate (or FPS) of the HD broadcast.... and also what your TV/display can output and what your recording device can input

the more frames per second the more information to record the bigger the filesize

720p rips of shows of around 45min length in x264 and 5.1 are 1.1gb.

so as campo said about 1gb-1.3gb would be on the money.
